How did you spent your Valentine’s

Today is the day when singles wish they are attached; that includes me, and couples wondering whether they should ‘give-in’ to the commercialization of a Western holiday tradition that has become a viral cultural envy for many people

We all grew up learning from the media that Valentine is a day you rush to stores to buy gifts and proclaim your love for one another. Kinda screwed-up hur and people are still ‘buying’ into it. In the papers recently, I saw special sections of flower and chocolate that’s on sale. The prices were absolutely ridiculous I tell ya.

Only on Valentine Days would such retailers hike-up the prices. If it can be marketed, ‘gundu’ Singaporeans will buy it. If you’re really going to get flowers or chocolates for your loved ones, buy it in advance and put it in the freezer

Cheapskates? Nah, I call it ‘planning’ in advance

It’s not all bad of course. Did you know initially that there’s this dude called St.Valentine way back long time ago man, who was actually marrying Roman soldiers secretly. And why? Because the Roman emperor prohibit married men in his Army. He thinks it makes them ‘sissy’.

Of course the Valentine dude was discovered, captured and beheaded … Ouch. Well that’s how it all started. Like I said, it’s not all bad, the Valentine fella has good intentions and to commemorate his ‘sacrifice’, we have the Valentine’s Day.

But of course, it got all commercialized when the Americans took advantage of the day by selling cards back in the 1800′s. Yes it all started with well-wishes Valentine card, then the chocolate and other gifts got into the mix. So basically we got screwed by the commercialization of the Americans

So enough of history there. Not many in fact knows that for us Muslims, we can’t actually celebrate such ‘Hallmark Holiday’. But I’ve seen many plenty of my ‘own kind’ who does celebrate Valentine’s Day. Well it does borders on blasphemous, but times are changing I guess

Do Singaporean Muslim feel obligated that such practices are necessary? Buying gifts, chocolates, flower, nice dinner, the whole package? Well it depends on the person itself … it’s really a complicated issue and I’ll be damn if I were to suck into such a debate

Anyway why should we pick this one Valentine Day, to shower our loved ones with such presents. Is it any different from the usual normal days that we guys showed our love

Truthfully coming from a guy point of view, the only reason we’re doing this is because we want to get ‘laid’ . Hahaha well that’s part of the reason of course. We also do it because we love to show our girls how important they are to us by giving them thoughtful gifts

But seriously, from my experience, if a girl tell ya that they don’t celebrate Valentine Days, don’t be a ‘gundu’ and do nothing for the day dude. It’s not about spending big, but it’s about taking the time to make them something, and that it came from you alone

Cooking dinner for her sounds good, or thumb through magazines for ideas to make the ‘perfect’ gift. Of course you can also do the above on any normal usual days, but not to do anything on such a ‘special’ day, I think you’re ‘asking’ for it. Trust me, it will sow the seed for future arguments

Deep down somewhere, your girl want to be pampered today, even if they tell you otherwise

And if you’re one of the ‘gundu’ guy that’s reading my blog now and just went “Hey I’m a gundu” … well there’s still time to salvage the day. Hurry and get off your butt and call your girlfriend

Good Luck!

hi. why did u say Muslims can’t celebrate this ‘hallmark holiday’. by hallmark, u mean the greeting card right? and by ‘celebrate’ does that mean also seeing it as a special day, yet doing something a little special, like what u mentioned, bringing the girl out for dinner and giving a simple gift?

Well we Muslim frown upon evens that’s of kafir origin (Non-Muslim festivals/tradition)

The thing is Singapore is such a melting pot of religion and races. You would see such as exchanging goodies between neighbours for example during our respective festivals.

It’s a nice gesture right, and in a way, we Muslim are ‘celebrating’ such occasions even it’s frowned upon … but like I said it’s a a joyous day and we want to share it with our friends and loves around us, no matter what ethnicity or religion.

That’s the bottomline and many people in Singapore share the same thinking. So I guess times are changing and you wouldn’t see this in our earlier hey-days.

In fact it also depends on location wise. I could be wrong, but I don’t think the muslims middle east people would join in the ‘celebration’ of other people’s religion

And as for Hallmark, yes I do refer to the Hallmark greeting cards. I don’t know the exact numbers but Valentine comes second behind Christmas in terms of greeting cards being sent.

The term Hallmark Holiday is appropriate for Valentine Day as it was such Hallmark greeting cards that got the ball rolling on the commercialization of Vday

Hope you’re doing fine down under Pam :)

Vday? Sounded very prehistoric to me.
I always associated v-day as a day where by some stupid gundu girl accidentally losing her virginity, in the name of love ha ha ha! To commemorate one day to LOVE is purely overrated, over commercialized and a conspiracy between men and the chocolate factories. Hehehe…me where got belief in love one?? Muahahahha!!!!!!

    • Uncle Sha February 16, 2008 at 12:13 am - Reply

You don’t believe in love … oh my

Well guys can be ‘scrupulous’ but not all guys are like dat lah

Must be those ‘bad boys’ types

Well just treat it like any other day then :)

i just lost my comment because i forgot to do my addition.. haha. Anyway, vday. The day we all love to love. But. Also love to hate. Such a decietful day. It just adds pressure to any relationship. Do something sweet and say i love u on an ordinary day, and i will be more happier than any woman would on valentines day!!

Ooopss … well the good thing, you did commented

Yeah another factor is pressure. I think people have a checklist of how the perfect date will be, that they forget to enjoy and go with the moment/flow
