What Uncle Sha learned

Kerri RussellAlright let’s get the ball rolling on my challenge of watching 30 “Chick Flicks” in 30 Days … oh god help me.

The first on the list is Kerri Russell’s Waitress, you know from the TV show Felicity.

Well overall it’s a depressing and frustrating movie for me.

The film portrays guys really in a bad light, and I can’t help either to feel pity or frustrated with Jenna (Kerri Russell), ok more of the latter.

Throughout the movie I felt like grabbing hold of Jenna, and saying to her, “Grab hold of yourself woman, be brave!”

Indeed I wanted to do that as she’s really in a bind, her luck with men was atrocious, one is a douche-bag of a husband who treats her bad, and slapping her silly.

While the other, the Doctor who can’t help to contain his dick in his pants, playing out his childhood fantasy infatuation by having an affair with Jenna, all this while happily married.

You might think Jenna wanted to be saved, and I would think she wanted to in the movie, as she demonstrated it again and again in the movie, of being submissive and lacking the courage to leave her piece-of-shit of a husband.

To her own surprise Jenna somehow found that courage the moment her baby was born. She even once termed herself an Anti-Mother in the movie, and in that instant she held her newborn, she just knew, and instantly changed.

Jenna and LuluJenna now knows she doesn’t need no man in her life to find purpose and happiness, that her life and her baby is her own for the saving, and hell have no fury of a woman with a fiercely motherly instinct.

Well I learned from the movie how motherhood changes a woman, being that her priorities will be different now, and we guys have to accept and adapt to that.

I’ve also learned that from Jenna’s colleague in the Pie Shop, the duo comic relief, that woman has a distorted image of themselves when they looked in the mirror. As a boyfriend, partner, husband or guy friend, I guess the only means I can’t think of to assure such insecurity is to tell the ladies that we’ll love them no matter what, and they look beautiful always.

On a endnote, the waitress who played the insecure Dawn, well that’s the director Adrienne Shelly, and it’s sad to hear she was murdered back in 2007 over a robbery, which was shortly after the movie was picked up for the 2007 Sundance Film Festival and bought by Fox Searchlight Pictures.
