When Mr. Dashwood dies, he must leave the bulk of his estate to the son by his first marriage, which leaves his second wife and three daughters (Elinor, Marianne, and Margaret) in straitened circumstances. They are taken in by a kindly cousin, but their lack of fortune affects the marriageability of both practical Elinor and romantic Marianne. When Elinor forms an attachment for the wealthy Edward Ferrars, his family disapproves and separates them. And though Mrs. Jennings tries to match the worthy (and rich) Colonel Brandon to her, Marianne finds the dashing and fiery Willoughby more to her taste. Both relationships are sorely tried. But this is a romance, and through the hardships and heartbreak, true love and a happy ending will find their way for both the sister who is all sense and the one who is all sensibility.
What Uncle Sha learned
Another brilliant movie added to my list of favorites.
It’s another masterpiece by Jane Austen, her last movie adaptation I saw was “Pride & Prejudice“, and this adaptation of “Sense and Sensibility” is somewhat related to the former.
Once again, it has never been so much fun to watch families trying to pair up their daughters with a good choice of a husband.
The movie touched on issues which I thought would be a bore, but instead turned captivating, such as marriage dowries to class issues.
I still could not understand with regard of the English obsession with class.
Nonetheless it’s a riveting drama, until so that I didn’t realized that two hours has passed as I sat in my seat, hoping Marianne and Elinor would find capable suitors.
The two sisters couldn’t be more different in personality.
Elinor is reserved while Marianne is the outspoken brazen one.
It’s ironic and befitting that the outcome of the two sisters love-life reflect the movie title.
After the usual conflicts in the movie, the older logical Elinor got to pair-up with Edward, whom she truly loves, while the emotional Marianne made a sensible decision in marrying the Colonel.
As Marianne says it best reciting a poem, “Is love a fancy, or a feeling”.
I think the above statement still holds truth, even now.
