In Sacramento, Abby Richter produces a morning news show that’s about to be canceled. To boost ratings, her boss hires Mike Chadway, a local cable call-in host who promotes the ugly truth: sex is the only glue in a relationship, men can’t change, and they only respond to women’s looks. Mike offends Abby’s sensibility: she has a checklist about the perfect man, and she’s found him in her new neighbor, Colin, a hunky doctor. Mike offers to help her reel in Colin if she’ll work with Mike on the show; she accepts the deal, ratings go up, and, with Mike’s help, so does Colin’s interest in her. Craig Ferguson, a hot air balloon, and the ugly truth help this take on “Cyrano” play out.
What Uncle Sha learned
The movie started with pretty Katherine Heigl who plays Abby, this really successful TV show producer who is not short of confidence, self-assured, yada yada yada, but she does have OCD issues such as being a control-freak.
Abby is someone I would call an Alpha-Female.
Although her career is going on well, she’s having a pittance of a love-life, more like a full-bloom crisis.
Abby single-handed managed to intimidate and scares off all her date and suitors away with her ‘charming’ personality.
I would think such a scenario above albeit fictional in the movie, has striking similarity in real life.
When a dude meets a girl who is far more successful and established than he is, he will feel intimidated … and yes that’s the UGLY TRUTH.
We men would like to think we’re all Alpha-Males, it’s wired in all of us ever since the beginning of time, as we’ve this tendency to provide and protect, plus you know it doesn’t ends well when there’s two main leads during a dance.
I guess it’s all about compatibility and how one perceives ‘success’. It all up to a person preference looking for insignificant lower-class mates, or a partner who is equal or greater.
But of course there’s plenty of half-truth that was being mentioned in the film.
When Gerard Butler said guys are visual creature looking for lust only, well I might add that men aside from being a visual creature, we men also have the capacity to love and learn. We’re not all animals looking for just lust.
The end result is that being just successful for a woman for me is not sexy per se, but add tiny bit of empowerment to her confidence, not over-confidence can be really sexy!
For me personally, and I’m sure many men out there “want to know not whether you are a successful woman, but instead if you are successful at being a woman, and can therefore make him happy as a man.”
I love the scene in movie where the duo was in the hot-air balloon and Abby asked Mike why she loves him, and he responded, “Beats the shit out of me but I am.” That would have been my same response too!
You just can’t put a finger on the very definition of love, you just do or don’t. You can’t dictate it, or rationalize it, you just have to take a chance, plunge head-long and experience it.
