The movie focuses on an old man reading a story to an old woman in a nursing home. The story he reads follows two young lovers named Allie Hamilton and Noah Calhoun, who meet one evening at a carnival. But they are separated by Allie’s parents who disapprove of Noah’s unwealthy family, and move Allie away. After waiting for Noah to write her for several years, Allie meets and gets engaged to a handsome young soldier named Lon. Allie, then, with her love for Noah still alive, stops by Noah’s 200-year-old home that he restored for her, “to see if he’s okay”. It is evident that they still have feelings for each other, and Allie has to choose between her fiance and her first love.
What Uncle Sha learned
I’ve actually read the book, by Nicholas Sparks prior to watching the movie a few years back, but somehow I’ve rather forgotten half of the storyline.
So it’s good that the “The Notebook” is on the movie list, so as I can refresh my ailing memory.
I would think this is one of the better tear-jerker for me, the part right at the end.
The scene where the old geezers both willed themselves to die in each other arms during the night, that was such a sad yet touching moment.
I was genuinely teary-eyed, and considering I’m the type that don’t really cry easily, ever, I think that’s the best I could come ever close to the usual bawling one’s eyes out.
Noah who was the quiet, unassuming man of few words, it was the young lad who knows what he wants in life, and goes all-out for it, whatever it takes.
As for Allie, for all her upbringing, pedigree, class, education, and opinionated, she was the ‘reserved’ one, seemingly unable to make her own choices.
Her life literally revolves around pleasing and catering to other people needs and expectations but her own.
Comparatively, if I were to choose between watching the movie or reading the book, the latter is far more detailed and inspiring.
The sex scene in the film was rather lackluster and such a bore. Plus the way it was being presented, there wasn’t much of a twist, everything was too obvious.
I know I said I couldn’t remember the book that much, but I do know that I felt much more content reading the book, than watching the movie version.
I’d say read the book first, then watch it. I’m sure you’ll agree with me.
