Last schooling semester I was taking this module about physiology of humans, drugs, its effects and such. And one particular lecture which caught my attention is Coca-Cola which was being presented. Yes the famous soft drink.
For all the right reason Coca-Cola is making headlines e.g it was the first soft drink to be consumed in outer space or even donating millions of dollars to charity and organizations … it also raises suspicions when they are absolutely so secretive of the ingredients being used in the making of Coca Cola or they being labeled ‘bullies’ in the emerging market of India where there’s reports of several assassinations of union organizers to quash any ‘protest’ and the high levels of pesticides detected in Coca-Cola India drinks.
I mean there’s plenty of soft drinks out there in the market, and what do you think makes Coca-cola ever so popular and capturing the major consumer share? Here’s a few thoughts.
Ever get that ‘kick’ feeling after you gulp down your Coke or the need to drink Coke if you stopped drinking it, accompanied with some withdrawal symptoms. Well some have claimed its due to the coca leaves, which is the by-product of cocaine.
Yes the term cocaine which you often heard and used in movies or more affectionately known also as Coke. Coca-Cola is also called Coke and Coke uses coca leaves to produce it. See the correlation?
Obviously for a hundred years now since it’s creation, Coca-Cola Company has denied such accusation that they ever had cocaine in Coca-Cola.
Yes they did explained to public and FDA (who governs the food/drugs stuff in USA) that coca leaves is used but have they have ‘cleaned’ all the alkaloids from the coca leaves from the soda drink. Coca leaves alkaloids is the ingredient which makes up the cocaine by the way.
Also not to forget too about the health issue at the amount of sugar going into your body per can of Coke.
People just don’t know that a can of Coke equals to about 39grams [Axiom] or 8 bloody teaspoons of sugar.
Drink one coke per day for the rest of your life, and do the calculations. Do you think your kidney is able to withstand that load of crap. Walaa, and thus diabetes,
Next you’ll be reminding me about diet soft drinks right. Well it’s the same. Studies [University of Texas Health Science Center] have shown that people who drinks diet soft drinks don’t lose weight.
In fact, they gain weight!
“For each can of diet soft drink consumed each day, a person’s risk of obesity went up 41%”
So well who’s or what to believe now?
I emailed Coca-Cola myself to seek answers and they were rather complete and concise with every question I detailed them. Their website is full of facts about their accountability and they seemed very defensive about the cocaine in the drink issue. Hmmm
So how about the cocaine in Coke eh and would you reveal the secret formula to me? Pretty please with cherry on top
Greg – The Coca-Cola Company (Industry and Consumer Affairs)
Please be assured that Coca-Cola does not contain cocaine or any other harmful substance, and cocaine has never been an added ingredient for Coca-Cola. The formula for Coca-Cola is a very closely, guarded trade secret. Therefore, we do not discuss the formula.
Oh ok thanks Greg.
Jeez for a moment there I thought you would give me the formula coz I gave out my best cute looking plea. Well I had to ask ;-p
And how about diabetes linked with the consumption of Coke over long periods?
No one food or beverage causes obesity. Obesity is a complex problem that has no easy answers. People gain weight when they consume more calories than their bodies use. The most important thing that children and adults can do to maintain a healthy lifestyle is to eat a variety of foods in moderation and get between 30 and 60 minutes of physical activity every day.
Obesity is a known risk factor for diabetes, but science has not established that consuming sugar causes diabetes. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) states that even sugar-containing foods and beverages can be consumed by diabetics as long as their total caloric intake remains within the recommended level. See www.diabetes.org
A research study published in August 2004 in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA)observed an association between frequent sugar-sweetened beverage consumption (more than once per day) and larger weight gain and an increased risk of type 2 diabetes in women. The authors of the study summarized their findings as follows:
“In conclusion, our findings suggest that frequent consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages may be associated with larger weight gain and increased risk of type 2 diabetes, possibly by providing excessive calories and large amounts of rapidly absorbable sugars.” The authors conceded, however, that “because of the observational nature of the study, we cannot prove that the observed associations are causal.” That is, this study does not prove that drinking soft drinks causes obesity or diabetes.
Several prior studies have not shown any correlation between sucrose (sugar) consumption and the development of type 2 diabetes, and the National Institute of Health and the American Diabetes Association do not list either soft drink consumption or sugar consumption as risk factors for the development of diabetes.
The known risk factors for type 2 diabetes are overweight/obesity, aging, ethnicity, family history of diabetes, low amounts of good cholesterol, previous gestational diabetes, a sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy eating habits.
Wow that’s a mouthful.
So you’re saying now it’s up to us to take care of our own health and Coke has nothing to do with diabetes right.
Rightttt …. Hey Greg thanks for the info. You can now relax one corner eh mat.
There’s one thing for sure, I’m glad that I’ve quit drinking soft drinks a few years back. I do drink it at parties but rarely, maybe just a sip.
It’s bad for your health, it stains my teeth and and too much sugar baby! If I want some sugar, I would rather have it in the form of some fine looking chick. Haha, any takers.
Well back to the point, this entry might seem like Coke bashing. Well it is as I’m against ‘soda drinks’. Some facts presented here might still be unsubstantiated or unproven but you have to admit Coke is raising eyebrows with its shady industry practices. Just do a Google search
Stay clean people
