In a few hours time, is arguably one of Manchester United important matches for the season. I’ll probably be up around 2.45am on Thursday morning watching the match with much anticipation. It’s Champions League Quater-finals first leg match versus AS Roma in Italy.
Being on home soil, I believe Roma will press on with an onslaught of ‘attacks’. I do hope Ferguson fledglings will dispatch Roma with early goals on the counter attack and hold on to an away goal lead hopefully.
Many people are writing off Roma as Man Utd is currently on good form, on domestic and Europe front, but they shouldn’t forget that it was the unfancied Roma who ‘brushed’ aside the highly regarded Gerard Houllier’s Lyon side in the last round.
Manchester United should look out for Roma’s skillful Mancini, who scored a superb goal against Lyon that put them through the Quaters. Roma coach Luciano Spalletti, who was a former Udinese coach, I bet have plenty of tactics up his sleeve after his well planned game against Lyon.
Also Man Utd should already have known that to stop Roma, they have to put a stop on the inspirational skipper, Francesco Totti, who is a World Cup winner and current Serie A’s top scorer this season.
Roma will be without suspended midfielder David Pizarro so Spalletti is set to play Christian Chivu alongside Daniele De Rossi in a defensive midfield set-up as part of a 4-2-3-1 formation. Matteo Ferrari and Philippe Mexes will be at the heart of the defence with Christian Panucci at left back and Marco Cassetti at right back. Playing behind lone striker Totti will be Rodrigo Taddei, Simone Perrotta and Mancini. Alexander Doni is set to line up between the posts.
As for Manchester United, they will travel to Italy with a modest 19 man squad. The latest injury to the list is Nemanja Vidic, who has broken his collar-bone and is likely to be sidelined for the rest of the season.
But still Manchester United is on a ‘roll’ being that they have just won recently 4-1 against Blackbrun at home. But yes, Blackburn is no Roma.
I think South Korean forward Park Ji-sung is out too with a sudden knee injury. Here are current injury list, Gary Neville (ankle), Mikael Silvestre (shoulder), and Nemanja Vidic (collarbone) were all ruled out.. Oh how we miss Henrik Larsson.
