Running Efficient

Sha July 18, 2007 11

Running is a very complex sport. People think sprinting is just look ahead and run forward, well basically it is but here’s the thing. Everyone has their very own body mechanics.

This will factor in how they will actually achieve that kind of running. Your body mechanics will determine if you’re wasting energy when running or you’re slower than others.

Safe to say, everyone is different, so you don’t have to worry about being the only odd one out

For me, I’ve this tendency to shake my head, bobbing up and down plus my body sway side to side too much. And I tend to sink-in when i run

Although I’ve cut down alot on that head shaking these few years but the side to side swaying, little progress there. There’s some progress but I’m still wasting energy swaying side to side when running. Also gotta work on my hips more, so as I don’t sink-in when I run.

I think basically because I was in dragonboat before taking up running, there’s a need to use my back & shoulder muscle alot for rowing. Thus my upper body is more developed and bigger than my legs then. But now it’s more proportional of course, if not I’ll look retarded.

Why?

Talking about dragonboat, going off topic awhile, I find it so so funny and hilarious to see ‘chicken legs’ on dragon boaters. I don’t know why these gorillas like to train their upper body only and neglect their legs. They got chop stick legs. Just observe aite!

Anyway back to your running mechanics, it’s good to ask your friends to observe how you run. Then proceed from there on how to improve yourself. By doing so, you’ll be running efficient, waste less energy and running faster!

It’s those little things during training that you could do …

    Hi Mr Sha-zzeneger,

That’s an interesting entry. Thanks for sharing. I’ve recently started running again, firstly to improve my fitness, secondly to lose some kilos and thirdly to get a better physique so i can start auditioning again for Bollywood. (jes kiddin’)

I try to hit the track 2-3 times a week, and have been doing it for the past 3 weeks now. Since my NS days, I’ve learnt to appreciate how practice makes me run better and faster. I like to measure the improvements and also I like how running enables me to think about stuff in a way that I normally don’t. I think it’s because of the increase in oxygen intake that causes the brain to also function a bit better. :P

ada betoi ka saya punya theory ini, from an expert point of view?

but overall, it does wonders for the morale.

haha me and arnie no same la … he’s a certified gorillas. me just small size

i think its a good initiative for you to get back start running. yes running is a good form of cardio to lose the weight. physically its great but physiologically its a plus point. knowing you’ve done your workout gives your enormous satisfaction .. keep it up

i recommend you vary your cardio activities. running is good, but doing it always can be a tad boring after sometime and you might lose interest

      vary it with
      – skipping
      – rowing
      – swimming
      – games

these are just a few cardio workout, its really up to you to explore

      ridj boleh!

try swimming lah!!! they give u GINORMOUS legs….or maybe it’s just for girls…

totally off topic bu i wanna discuss anyway…

i swam for my school for 4 yrs. developed MASSIVE shoulders (Which have subsided, thank god) and thunder calves…my calves are bigger than alot of guys out there because of it. i hate swimming!!! hahah actually i love swimming so cannot complain. but yeah…

actually i noticed…guys and girls on the swimming team. the guys will get big arm and amazing 6packs…girls will develop really broad shoulders and huge calves….in turn losing the curves in their body. a girls goes from having an hr glass figure to have like this upside down triangle…just like a guy….scary tau!!!! my shoulders are now 17″ wide. my mom comments everytime she measures me for baju kurung that my shoulders are too broad…kanasai.

but alas, i havent stepped into the gym since i left high school 5 yrs ago…and i’m paying for it….no motivation lah….*sigh*

yup i’ve tried swimming .. i dun do it often, i cant have massive shoulders. tak boleh lari nanti :-)

wah you’re a swimmer!! your pics i dun really see a good view of your shoulder. i bet its bigger than mine ? :-p just kidding

sometimes you cant choose your genes. maybe your calf are more endowed with pre-disposed muscular calf. just a little workout on it, might pump them

yes swimmer have chicken legs too i noticed. i cant reason why, as i thought legs are essential in swimming? don’t they workout the legs?

maybe toning is what you need now?
