Starting Blocks Basics

My background in sports is pretty ‘screwed up’

When I was a kid, I was always on the run like every other kid on the block. The usual; games, running about, soccer and such

I was pretty active, never the fastest, nor the strongest, but just about average.

Mediocre somewhat to say the least in everything I do. Never really up to the standard of being good enough to represent any clubs or school, well except for a brief year during my final term of high school

Only when I was exposed to the various activities during National Service, I began to focus on running more and more

Not that I WANT to, but HAD to, being that most of our daily mandatory exercises are cardio-running related workouts

Here’s the thing. If I were asked to specialize my event in running, my body type is built more towards the sprinting side. Up till now, I’ve no problems putting on muscle mass …

… but it seems I had more ‘success’ in the longer distances event rather than the sprint side, due to my earlier background in distance running during National Service

It took me a long time to finally realize this, that I’ve the built for the shorter sprint and these few years I’ve been trying hard to change myself; physically and mentally

You might think with these muscles that I ‘have’ I’ll do fine but so far I’ve been stagnant.

It doesn’t matter if my calf is defined or I’ve a nice looking biceps. In sprinting, what’s the use of a nice aesthetic looking bod, if you ain’t fast.

But I’ve not given up of course, I’ll still keep on trying.

My aim this year is trying to get more fast twitch muscle, get my body running mechanics right, correct my technique

Well I’ve gone back to basics in fact

During my current phase of training, I’ve started to use the starting blocks these days

The other day I tried to do blocks and timed myself for 30m workout. Safe to say, I didn’t managed to do it juggling both timing & sprinting. Looks like I need to get a camera + tripod on my shopping list

So far the only bright spot in this entry is that, I’ve been following my training plan which I created since last year, as much as I possibly can. If I missed the training, I make it a point making up for it during the weekend

That means no social life. Bleah nothing new there

Here’s a good video below for you, if you wish to know the basic fundamentals in starting blocks

I’ve not given up my dream, have you?
