“I’ve public debts”, Tommaso Padoa-Schioppa, the finance minister, announced tax increases, including a rise in VAT on chocolate from 10 to 20 per cent

“This shows the government wants to hurt children,” said Paolo Grimaldi, an MP for the Northern League.

“I have written a letter to all MPs to form a Defend Nutella Committee. This is how we will stop Prodi. This time the prime minister has been caught with his hand in the honey pot, or even the Nutella jar.”

Mr Grimaldis party represents the northern region of Piedmont, where the hazelnuts which go into Nutella are grown. In his letter to his fellow politicians, he wrote: “Nutella is the symbol of an entire generation. Who did not grow up on bread and Nutella?”

Nutella sells almost a billion of its glass jars every year across the world.
