If the name “Grace Quek” doesn’t ring any bell to you, how about “Annabel Chong”?
Like, a year ago, I saw a particular guy wearing a tee shirt with the word “I Love Annabel Chong” on it together with the outline map of our dearest little peaceful serene country. Took a glance at the shirt, read the wordings on it, paused for a few minutes wondering who the heck this Annabel was, and eventually it just slipped off my mind.
I only got to know who she is when a friend of mine talked about wanting to watch “Sex: The Annabel Chong Story” after her lecturer discussed about the film and all about her (Well, you see, my friend takes a media-related diploma, thus the constant discussion on movie and film reviews.
It’s not that the lecturer is one sick, old perverted cheekopek).
Still know nuts about who she is/ was? Ouh hell yeah you should know. It’s a Made-in-Singapore kinda talent, okay, nothing like the don’t pray pray kind.
Okay just two words to describe her; porn star. A Chinese Singaporean raised by her Christian parents and one who excelled in her studies.
Her rise to stardom began when she was in the University of Southern California, studying feminism.
Being a strong believer of feminism, she presented her work in pornography as an attempt to challenge the settled notions and assumptions of viewers about female sexuality. For example, her conception of a gangbang was based on the example of Messalina, a wife of the emperor Claudius. Historically, Messalina has suffered a poor reputation, a fact that some attribute (at least partly) to gender bias.
Annabel sought to question the double standard that denies women the ability to exhibit the same sexuality as men, by modelling what a female “stud” would be.
And thus the world record-breaking event that happened in January 1995 starring Annabel herself for the Biggest Gang Bang! Woohoo. 70, 251,10. Scramble the digits, pick 4 numbers and make your way down to the nearest 4-D kiosk. Haha. 70 men, 251 times, all in 10 hours. Now that’s Fun Fact #0482!
The whole incident was shot on tape, made into a documentary directed and produced by Gough Lewis and was released in 1999 with the title, “Sex: The Annabel Chong Story”. The documentary became a hit when it was released at the Sundance Film Festival, nominated for the Grand Jury Prize.
Annabel Chong, the girl that had made a name in the international porn industry thus shining a spotlight on the sunny lion city. Is she considered a national icon? Maybe alongside with that Sarong Party Girl or Fiona Xie? Is it her claim to stardom or her claim to notoriety. A porn star, or a hardcore believer of feminism. A national pride, or a national shame. Well what do you think.
Go think about it, research about it, print her pictures and paste them up on your walls. She’s an idol, a Singapore Idol. Who says Singaporeans can’t achieve anything? Haha.
And as for me, I got intimate with Annabel last night at a play by Toy Factory Productions. 251 is a play inspired by the Annabel Chong Story. It was fantabulous, to say the least. It really puts you in Annabel’s shoes going through all the emotional ups and downs in her life. I would tell you the details of the showtime and price charges but it’s kinda late cuz there isn’t any available seats left till the 15th.

Whatever it is, I don’t find her achievement anything to be ‘proud’ of, and that same perception of mine goes the same for men who go around having sex with a million other women. Just my opinion la hor :)

When i did my own review of 251, it wuz a pretty hurried one. All i could think of were the scenes involving young Grace and her schoolmate, and the ones of those two all grown up and playing their grown-up hide-and-seek.
And yes, you’ve laid the necessary info needed to pique everyone’s interest! :)
I would suggest watchin 251 first, go for supper, ponder over it, then watch the documentary.
See if you can’t get her out off your mind for the next few days after that.

Ouh, I love each and every moment of the play. It’s fantabulous! Especially the last part, the performance art act, is just ouh so deep in meaning. It’s like I don’t mind watching it for the second time.
