MELAYU “LAMA”, MELAYU “BARU”

Suka tak suka, u all kena telan hidup-hidup. Hehe.
Tapi u all jangan salah faham. U all masih tak salah “channel”. Masih juga berada di “Saluran 5″. Bukan “Suria”, bukan “TV3″ mahupun “saluran RTM”.
Jangan marah, Tok Penghulu Sha, “promo” sikit… Hehe.

I guess the achievement of our malays versus the golongan yang ‘semakin tidak terkawal’ i think is not proportional.
I do hope those I observe buang masa and buat benda tak senonoh is a minority and not all youth are like that.
Yeah but then again, looking like that (tattoos, etc) is just being superficial, I’m sure something might have transpired them for that ‘makeover’, haha. Maybe in denial, gaveup on academic, etc.
But i think they’ll mature up when they ‘hard knocks’ of life comes knocking & only to realise it’s too late to go back.
So how to offset or remedy this? To make them realize, the right path. Or are we being too keepoh and self-righteous. Who are we to tell them what to do kan. Nak tolong ke tak nak eh. Why help others, when we ourselves need help maybe? … haha, so complicated.
It’s a good entry that raises such issues. So now how to transition from ‘rant’ to ‘help’. That’s the question …
For the rest, here’s a few tool to translate malay > eng

uncle sha…. amacam? satu entry in malay arh! hehehe….
My Bahasa is kindergarten level … please I don’t want to embarass myself, haha! :-p
yar.. its sad lah… that many ‘buruk’ things, orang melayu kita juga tempah nama… but when it comes to good things, we also got in the news too… but not that much…
anyway, in my workplace, ramai jugak angota angota bomba melayu yg ada tatoo… but surprisingly, kaum cina tak ada langsung…
not that im saying its a bad thing or what lah… but what i came to know, this mat mat with tatoo are really good people… maybe dorang terdesak in certain unforsee circumstances…
dulu lain.. sekarang pon lain.. with the tv shows, anak metropolitan and hanyut being aired, they raised much controversies if this is actually the reality that’s happening to the Malay community.
To the extent that some would say that, “Being a Malay, and being a Muslim, is two different thing. So which one are you.”
eerrrmmm….
true aint it? one is a race, another is a religion.
way of life and belief of life. budaya dan agama.
thanks, finally had the chance to read in malay.
“Being a Malay, and being a Muslim, is two different thing. So which one are you.â€
that’s a good question. i’m both. but the sad thing is in the country i’m living, very few knows what malay is and muslim = terrorist!
thanks to nas, if not for nas, shahruddin’s blog won’t have a nice good malay entry. hahaha! cos his malay is damn terok like mine. ROJAK mama!!
i no comment hor … haha
hahahaha yah lor. I have a hard time reading this article. die. must brush up my skills malay liao.
I hope to sum up everything in next week’s entry in a short and brief paragraph pertaining to this article.
I’m so touched by the sincere and frank comments made by the readers of this blog, and hopefully, the upcoming entry will be a better one.
But don’t worry guys. My next Wed’s entry will be written in a much simpler Malay, but interesting.
Look out for it, yeah?
Signing off,
Bro Nas
Semuanya terlampau terpengaruh dengan budaya – budaya barat. Gothic dengan celak tebal la, apa la. Kalau ikut Sunnah Nabi takper gak, tapi ikut trend atau fesyen. Ntah apa diorg pikir pun tak tau. Dah la kat Midvalley hari tu siap budak2 Gothic pakai kot. Tak panas ker? Hehehe this is not oversea ma.
haha, betul jugak observasi anda … I think kids are impressionable lot. Easily get influenced by media stream. But how to restrict such media, quite impossible. I guess it has to start from home

Betul apa yang ko cakap ni. Apa nak jadi ngan dorang ni. best sangat ke jadi samseng. Bukan boleh buat duit.
Setakat jadi matrep dan papa jahat adalah.
:D
(sorry, but I have to switch to English mode)
However, the number of troubled teens/parents/households seems to outweight the number of Malays professionals we have. There isn’t much success stories within the Malay community that we can pride on. The number of Malay professionals are too little to make an impact in the community. In Singapore context, I believe many will have difficulties naming a sucessful Malay. In their viewpoint, Malay = problems. Can’t fault them.
Compare to the Chinese and Indians. They too have to deal with similar problems in their community. However, they have way too many sucessful individuals within their community, that the number of the rich and professionals outweights the number of the so-called problematic individuals, dwarfing these blacksheep in the community.
Let’s use this analogy (dun quote it as an official figure, just an exmaple):
For every 10 Chinese teens, 5 in Uni, 3 working, 1 owns a business, 1 is a troubled youth.
For every 10 Malay teens, 1 in Uni, 0 owns a business, 5 working, 3 troubled youths, 1 is a teen father.
They look at our community and they see nothing special about us, nothing that we can gloat about, they only see young Malay with tatoos pushing prams. We look at them, they stay in condos, they talk about stocks.
If we can’t prevent these teens from going wayward, why not us, the ones yang tak mungkin akan terjebak ke dalam gejala sosial ini (insyallah), do something about ourselves, so that we can tilt the balance within our community, thus overshadowing these problematic group, and sooner or later they’ll realise they have no choice but to buck up.
P/S: Whoever stay condo or landed, look around you, any Malay neighbours? You’ll find Indians but hardly Malay. Bear in mind, Indian is the smallest ethnic group in Singapore. Sha, do you see many Malays in NTU?
A well-written comment by Hairol. Gonna post his views in my blog.
Well-done, bro!
Thanks Nas. Ur entry was well-written too. Well, the issues have to be looked at from various viewpoint. No point playing the blamegame. Action is necessary to tackle the problem.
Betul tu Hairol, tak ramai Melayu menceburi bidang perniagaan tapi yang dah berjaya plak ada gak yg buat hal. Skandal sana sini, ada kuasa lain plak citer nyer. Susah tul. Very low profile, walaupun dah berjaya tapi tak lupa buat kebajikan. Kereta sederhana, handphone dah sebaya usia dia, lepak minum teh tarik favorite dia.

This comment was adapted from my blog. Commented by a guest (angelovecristiano@yahoo.com.sg), I do hope that his/her comments may inject some sense pertaining to my entry. – BRO NAS
a pity that u feel that way about Malays. no doubt many have stereotyped, talked about and analysed the ‘Malay’ population lagging behind and what nots. the issue is being looked at from various angles, from those who denies it and to those who claim it to be true. when we take a look ard and check out the stats, the Mlys seem to only affirm and prove the stereotype right.
if we want to look at the no. of Mlys in tertiary education, mmg tk ramai. unfortunately those yang in the tertiary level, dorang lah yang kekdg reject Mlys… as in they don’t want to be regarded as a Mly. sayang kan… bcos as the elite few of the society, they could be the future leaders of our society.
alhamdulillah, thr is also the group in tertiary institutions that is trying hard to rise above others and harumkan nama Melayu dan juga nama Islam. i heard recently that there are alot of Melayu these days who have rejected Islam and it is becoming a phenomenon. astaghfirullah, May Allah keep us away from harm.
anyway, just to address the issue. there could be a few ways to look at this Mly lagging behind thing. mestilah kita, amongst those who can see this issue and wants to see it change (or at least, I would LOve to see this change…) should try and combat it. mmg it’s not easy. but it doesn’t mean it’s not possible. apa gunanyer kalau we sit at the sidelines and watch ppl destroy themselves, watch the society degrade into a vicious cycle. we have been granted intelligence (from the Almighty) to elevate those who are not able to elevate themselves.
one of the ways as mentioned by ‘uncle sha’ is to begin with our own family. u have it spot on! in Islam, family always comes first… and it is whr the strength of community lies in. if u can didik ur kids well and produce the next generation of org yang berguna dan bertaqwa. alhamdulillah… your contribution to our society will be priceless.
also, i think it’s important to assist our own kind. not to look at them and jijik atas their flaws… but look at them and see that it is our RESPONSIBILITY sbg umat islam to elevate and help those in need. our assistance could go miles if we know how to go about doing it.
of cos we have to battle society’s mindsets and so on. that is an ultimate challenge. but hey, who said life’s easy? =) lastly, in WHATEVER you do… your education, future and family… DO THE BEST! aim to be the BEST. kalau nak jadi engineer… go all the way beb! jgn hold back. berani mencabar diri. berani aim high. kalau nak jadi doctor, same thing. be THE BEST. if you want to be a businessman… aim to be THE BEST too. earn lotsa money!!! $$$$$$$ haha.
just one thing – REMEMBER… to give back to society. not only in terms of $$ but also in terms of energy, expertise and time. no point being elevated and u tak tolong org lain. itu dah salah. then u’re not doing anything in line with elevating the society. u’re not doing ANYTHING to change society. tts called selfish. hehe. =) because in Islam, it is not wrong to achieve great dreams and aspirations. but we must never forget why we do it. for Allah that is. so be the best and stay grounded. that’s all i have for now.
I do feel that stereotyping arises from the our personal feelings we have for our OWN group and against the OTHER group. I mean it’s quite justifiable to voice out such opinions and observation, rather than ‘keeping’ it inside. Put it out in the open, accept, and deal with it. But how we each deal with it, depends on us individually I guess, as at the end of the day, it’s the lives that we wish to lead anyway
Yes in that golongan ‘bright’ tertiary students I’ve seen those who rejected their own race (eg would only date race outside their own, slang english nak mampos, etc) as the commenter mentioned but I don’t think it makes up the majority.
Kudos for the commentor for his inputs, thou he doesn’t agree on your viewpoints at least he all for it on Malays equality, it’s future heading and giving back to the community, no matter you’ve ‘made it’ or not
Hahaha Sha, awak memang betul. Apa yang saya alami masa saya nak masuk public university dulu adalah bila kita berkawan dgn golongan student2 private university or college, kdg2 kita kene ikut cara diorg ckp in order nak ngam ngan kepala diorg. What a hypocrite it was. But not all of them are like that.
Tapi sekarang ni, kalau kita berkawan dgn org yg sosial yg suka clubbing and such, kita kene plak beropen minded like them. I do open minded but I’m a geek who don’t do clubbing and such. Hahah sampai sekarang memang susah nak ngam ngan org yg social. I know that I don’t have a mercedes or a David Beckham kind of looks. I know that I’m not a vogue kind of person. But do I have to do clubbing, drinking or else in order to socialize myself?
Nas, you really have a nice comment on your blog. Keep up the good post on your blog.
kalaulah “melayu baru” wujud, i will be very happy. why are we so afraid of this melayu baru? afraid that the conservative minds of ours couldn’t and wouldn’t want to accept them? and if so, why? why can’t we move forward in the new era? there will always be some strays along the way. we have to accept it. it is just that we ourselves have to do whatever we think it is right.
aren’t we (malays) supposed to be more open-minded?
whether i accept the other person’s view/act or not, that is really up to me. i am responsible for my very own feelings. unfortunately, the malays or is it the asian cultures, prevent us from speaking up our own opinion, because we do not want to hurt other people’s feeling. frankly speaking, i am fed-up with this kind of attitude, because it is a waste of time and energy (not to mention the emotions). why can’t we just tell the other person straightaway and let him/her know that whatever he/she just did hurt our feelings and discuss it if necessary. everything can be discuss!
are we still jealous of other people’s achievement? talking behind their back when we heard something whereby the person is proud of? why can’t we just congratulate them and tell ourselves that we too can achieve the same, if not better. do we lack of self-confident?
everytime i come back to singapore and see the young guys wearing that rapper’s winter headgear (i don’t mean caps), i could only laugh. whether it is trendy or just plain stupidity, i don’t know. it is hot and uncomfortable to wear that thing! i will only wear it when it is below freezing point and windy! but again it is their choice, not mine.
syaf, you don’t have to drink alcohol in order to be part of the gang. i know cos most of my clubbing friends do drink (a lot) and i stick to my non-alcoholic stuffs (wasn’t worth the money though). i don’t have the problem that they are drinking and i am not, and if i do, then it is MY problem. i have the choice.
friends are those who accept the way you are and who you are. if you try to be something different, then you only lie to yourself! just be yourself.
just from my experience.
biarlah ‘the association of malays stigma’ becomes our past, and should not be back on contention.
we are very fortunate, for we are malays but muslims in our self.I tell u all one thing, are already towards becoming more and more interesting to know for many banggsa outside there.Banggsa lain have know taht malays are something ‘ lifeline’ in this part of ‘nusantara’
this has to be made known to all malays to ensure our malays are not leftout again and again.
as for the malays at the pinacle of life,my seruan is help, help, help, other unfortunate malays to be at the arus perdana.as for the middle malays, waht we need now is to strive really’HARD, A VERY HARD’ one on waht ever field u do as a business of yours, whether be it in education, work, career, and economic business.as for the ‘cukup makan’ ones,i like u very much indeed.u are the backbone of the malays.carry on focus on kecemerlangan.
our interest now has been outlined claerly, contitutuionally we are ok and comfortable.we are covered on many aspect of citizendry.
malys ngos’,mendaki, amp and tha muis are there to assist in every way u want it to be.tell
them waht u need and i beleive they are happily willing to help the malays.
every institution now, kita sedar atau pun tida, hendak menolong mealyu.
fikir2lah sejenak and i will kembali again to share with u all, kawan2.
bye c u.
melayu sama jer – yg bezanyer agama die.
kita jgn tgk org lain – tgk diri kita sendiri. ade degree tak?
Apatah lagi kita ingin mencari MELAYU BARU???
Neway all the best to taukeh blog dan semuaa, keep it up! Ma’asalamah :)
