The Geek in Me

120GB for $129, portable hard-disk for backup

I’m still a geek at heart

Although I don’t frequent Sim Lim Square or Funan Centre as I used to when I was younger, I still get a thrill of looking at anything IT related

*Hint hint* for my future dates or birthday gifts … haha

But it’s an expensive hobby

Being a pauper student doesn’t help either back then.

I could only afford a window shopping spree at SLS, eying the latest gadgets, or imagining that the part would be awesome for rig (rig aka desktop computer for the IT idiot)

I’m pretty frugal myself. In fact my current rig is D.I.Y (Do it yourself) and from top to bottom, everything is made up of second hand parts.

My second hand nVidia 128MB MX440 GeForce 4 graphics card

Call me cheap but I rarely buy a first hand hardware in my life. I mean the stuff still works, why not use it and still get a good bargain out of it. I also like to work with my hand and build my own PC. I may look aloof and mat, but what goes inside this brain is a hardcore geek at heart

Anyway recently only did I splurge on a portable backup hard-disk for all my web work stuff. I think I really need it, thus the purchase and it’s about time I splurge something on myself fancy

My three IDE hard-disk. Couldn’t buy a SATA one as my mobo is old. Like me!

I’m quite impulsive as a person in-fact. I still wondering how am I not still bankrupt by now. Maybe it’s because, if there’s any urges, I would always question myself “do I really need the item in the first place”

Well that works great for buying stuff, but I’m still impulsive when it comes to relationship and such … bummer

Well anyway here are some of my rig photos. Recently I also bought a cheap second hand Maxtor 80GB hard-disk. A new one would cost me three times over. Why buy a new one, when a second hand works well.

My rig is on Pentium 4 at 2.4GHz with 2 slots of 1GB ram

Next on my shopping list, is to purchase a laptop. Well for this one, I’m still wondering if I should get a new one or second hand. Well I’m still undecided. I’ve started saving and I shall shamelessly name my laptop Fiona… keke

Well if you want IT lobang, I usually get my stuff from HardwareZone forums. So peeps, wanna share what kind of a rig are you running on?

    Dude 120GB for $129 ? There is a sale going on @ Cybermind: 320GB for $150.

This is problem with SLS. Actually, more of a problem with the individuals. You have to really decide how much diskspace you want and to stick with the current budget.

you got it right there about a person’s adequacy.
i know i could get it cheaper and more at SLS and waste 3 hour trip down

but i chose my current one, and bought it in sch.
More expensive than SLS, slightly cheaper than outside but I save time. Exam mode now

Your rig is cool! I got three optical storage too!! haha, i think two is enough

My monitor is the bulky one, got it cheap at $20. i want your flatscreen! hehe. sell me if you’re upgrading

Only the OS is not pirated. Foundation must be real, original and authentic. Then the rubble won’t fall (pirated software). Hehehe

katak, cybermind? You sure you wanna shop there? It’s notorious for being called choppermind, you know… As in… You only buy from that shop if you don’t mind being chopped. Hahahha.

sha, your gfx card is running on PCI slot arh? That doesn’t look like an AGP or PCI-e slot to me… And I think it’s time you clean out your processor fan. Hahaha. And I wouldn’t place my harddisks so close together like that if I were you… Btw, you can get a SATA PCI card for like 20 bux. That’s what I did.

    • Uncle Sha November 6, 2007 at 6:41 pm - Reply

my gfx is AGP, can see the brown slot there

well i give it another 6months to clean it. my last processor i never cleaned it for 3 years and it works fine

well the HDD, the middle one is another backup. So the middle one is like the unused one and will dissipate the heat away, keke. not recommended but hey its my way. Also not seen is a big extra fan i placed in front of the HDD rack. another fan on the casing too. got it via my friend

oooh yeah i’m thinking of getting that SATA PCI, maybe on my next upgrade. Thanks!!

I dunno dude. I don’t usually buy my stuff from Cybermind. I’m just saying that there is a crazy sale currently going on with that shop :-)
