Stop Spam, Referrer Karma and Spam Plugins

Sha June 16, 2007 2

Do this! I went from 300 plus spams per day to 0 spams daily now!

Recently there was major downtime on my blog. Though it was offline for 1 hour plus, to get back to normal level took more than that. I believe it was spam bots that targeted couple of my scripts that brought the WordPress crashing.

So I’m taking precaution now, making so called ‘road blocks and checks’ by installing new scripts, so as spammers will be denied entry creating havoc while letting the normal users access. If you’re experiencing any problems, do contact-me

I recommend if you’re running on WordPress, to do so likewise as I did. It’s better to play safe before such incident happens. Nobody likes a downtime. Here’s what I did after much research.

Installed Referrer Karma
This is not a plugin, so you need to manually install it via coding. Edit couple of file, install the SQL and it’s done. More suited for intermediate webmasters. The good thing about this is that it will deny access when any spam bots try to get through your blog. The advantages of using this is that it will result in less drainage of your bandwidth and lesser spams

Math comment spam protection
This is a plugin, a one click install from the plugins admin page, however you still need to add a code to ‘comments.php’. It uses hash and javascript for it’s math question, so spammers can’t decode it and outsmart it. Making it plausible for only humans are able to comment, thus no more spams! Look at my comment box, you can see the added math question spam protection added to it

Simple Trackback Validation
Sometimes people forget that spammers also spam your trackback. Trackbacks are comments left in your blog when another blog linked to you. So spammers loves to use this loophole. Although Akismet that comes with WordPress handles the normal spam, it doesn’t cover much of the trackback spam. So this plugin will come in handy! Basically it will check if the track is valid and ensure a trouble free spam situation

I hope this guide is helpful. If you have any other suggestions, just drop a comment
