I’m a big sports fan and an enthusiast at it too. One of the things that keeps me going ‘strong’ playing sports all these years, other than for the love of playing it, is getting inspired by elite professional athletes who does wonders in the ‘field’.
That’s why I truly think “Champion of Champions 2008” by ESPNSTAR.com, alongside SportsCenter India, Asia & Malaysia, and Score Tonight is a great initiative.
Basically its to vote for Sports Personality of the year. But overall it acknowledges these fine athletes and their contribution to the sports, whatever measure or accomplished it is.
There’s already 16 shortlisted athletes already, here they are in no order what so ever:
Well the one that are in my ‘own’ top-list among the shortlisted are Michael Phelps, Cristiano Ronaldo, Usain Bolt, Sir Alex Ferguson, Lewis Hamilton and Nicol David.
For one I love soccer and it seems my MUFC Cristiano Ronaldo and Sir Alex Ferguson are in the list. So that’s good. I can’t help but support them right. Ronaldo is in a class of his own, and with his record scoring from for a winger, he is just untouchable. As for Fergie, what can I say. He’s a legend, I recalled his exploits at Aberdeen FC winning European Cup Winners’ Cup back in 1982-83 season against all odds. I just love an underdog story.
As for the ‘human torpedo’ Michael Phelps, I can’t help but be at awe at his 14 career Olympic gold medals, eight of those was from the recent Beijing Games. The very reason I watch the first half of the Beijing Olympics (I usually follow soccer and athletics only mind you) was because of this man feat in the pool. I’m also amazed at his daily diet intake which hovers in the 4000 calories a day. That’s enough for two person, and for his elite status, he needs all those energy to do his best during competition and training.
Focusing on Usain Bolt, being a runner myself, the world record form he shown recently in Beijing was out of this world. He totally obliterated the field of world class sprinters in the finals. He made them look like kucing-kurap runners alongside him. Bolt nearly made me wanna pickup my spikes again and come out of retirement. The young lad has a bright future and I reckon he’s good for another two Olympics.
I can’t help but also add Nicol David to my list, as she’s the pride and joy of Asia. World number one ranking is no joke mind you. Being part Malaysian myself, I feel the pride and hopes of a whole nation on this young lass shoulder. You can’t also help but wanna pinch that cute chubby cheeks of hers.
Well you get my point, its time to acknowledge these fine athlete …
