dawn

Your body is a natural alarm clock itself. It learns from your sleeping pattern and best formulate the suitable timing to wake up. These days I’ll automatically wake up around 4am for my morning puasa sahur. Rarely do I need to use the alarm clock

For the non-Muslims, we wake up early as we need to fulfill our sahur requirement, which is a pre-dawn meal. Fasting is just not about refraining from drinking or eating, it’s an overall attempt to purify ones thoughts and actions to gain the pleasure of Allah.

Here’s an overall view of what is fasting about

Fasting = Avoid drinking and eating from dawn to sunset

Sahur = Pre-dawn meal (Eat & Drink before Azan Subuh)

Iftar = Break fast (Eat & Drink once Maghrib)

For the non-Muslims, well if you wondering who should fast, well it’s Muslims who have reached physical maturity. Only ladies during menstruation and women during the blood of childbirth should not fast

Of course we can excuse ourselves from fasting if we’re sick, pregnant, mothers nursing their babies and those who are traveling far distances and the need for fluid and food intake to stay awake

There are simple rules to follow which might deem as an act that will invalidate the fast during the day. Well I’ve a compiled a list below. They are

  • Intercourse
  • Masturbation
  • Eating and drinking
  • Anything that is regarded as coming under the same heading as eating and drinking
  • Vomiting deliberately
  • Menstruation

In fact it is shown by medical studies that fasting is in fact beneficial. When you eat less, you tend to burn more fat and calories, thus maintaining a better body weight and loss, as your energy is said to be balanced.

So you non-Muslims or those with inter-racial relationships can tag along during this fasting months. Give it a try, the gahmen trying to promote social harmony anyway

Some of my non-Muslims friends are very cute with their remarks

Friend: Eh brada you cannot oggle at ladies
Me: I can look, sometimes it’s a natural reaction for all guys, can’t help it lah. Just don’t have kinky thoughts and your fast will not batal

Friend: Eh brada if you see a nude photo on Internet, your fasting game over ah
Me: No it isn’t, as it’s unintentional. You did not attempt to find or seek such photos. It’s all a state of the mind

Friend: Eh brada you cannot blow into things right
Me: Yes you can like playing an instrument, as long the object is not swallowed or gets into your windpipe

Friend: Eh brada you cannot wank for one month seh
Me: Well technically it’s just for the span of half the day, but yeah I can tahan one month

I do hope the above is helpful for the non-Muslims who has Muslims friends. Hope it gets a few misconception out of the way and farnees ideas about us during this Holy month

u get all these questions a LOT from friends ere.. abt what we can do and especially WHY we fast etc.. ands its cute to see their interested faces.. and what surprises them the most is the non-consumption of liquids.. they dont really care so much about the ‘tahan..’ issue hahahahahaha!

    • Uncle Sha says:

yeah they’re quite cute with their reactions and response yar

well they sometimes forget they offered you drinks/food & they’ll go like “oh my god, will i go to hell for offering you food” … haha, cute

on a semi-unrelated note.. my cousin took her friend with her to go buy halal meat.. and shez obviously non-muslim.. and she was about to pick up a tray of cold meats and she turns to my cousin and says “OH.. am i allowed to touch it” hahahahahhahaa,, she thought her touching it would make it un-halal.. tooo cute!

    Cool post!
Just a reminder that fasting isn’t a physical act only. It is more spiritual & is to strengthen one’s character & iman/inner relationship with God & spiritual worship.

So, need to add these to the list too: - no backbiting (gossiping etc) or lying with ill intent
    - being more patient & of good character & conduct while fasting (I’ve seen people who fast but then get angry easily or get lazy & are less responsible compared to when they were not fasting. This is the opposite meaning of fasting in the first place because fasting promotes us to be more patient & serious in completing our responsibilities because we are working on upholding good moral conduct).

& of course as a Muslim, doing the 5 daily prayers is the basic obligation of muslims. Without completing the prayers, of course the fast is not accepted. So it’ll be good to focus on carrying this obligation out consistently first :)

    Thanks for the useful post!

Ps: forgot one more, no smoking >
