Everyone has their ‘idols’. Someone who is “an ideal instance; a perfect embodiment of a concept”. As for mua, it was my dad when I was young. Well you know, when you’re a kid you practically idolises your parents, wanting to emulate them in any form.
I can recalled back then, I would brandish this really big CASIO watch on my small arms, my hair slicked back and shirt tucked out, a complete ‘replica’ of my dad. The only thing that frustrated me back then, was that I wasn’t able to sport a moustache as my dad did.
Hahaha, how could I eh, I was in Primary school age then.
For the longest time since then, I don’t really have anyone I looked up to. The cloeset thing that comes close to an ‘idol’ are my training partners. Training wise, I always seek my teammates, as a sort of a motivating factor, well you could say, it’s not really idols.
I’ve always this hunger to keep-up with their pace and ‘beat’ them if possible; and they likewise. It’s a ‘healthy’ sort of competition between us.
But academic wise, I’ve no one I can really say I wanted to emulate. My family is the type that doesn’t emphasise much on education. Mum did when I was young, but then she ‘left’.
So it was practically a lonesome journey for me after that. At times, my dad don’t even know that I’m in university … “Eh kao masih sekolah. Ingatkan dah kerja”. Hahaha, cute.
The thing about today’s entry of idols is because I was reading up old archive NTU magazine and I came across a column which I can really relate to very much. Someone ‘inspiring’. It’s an old NTU alumnus, Mr Masagos Zulkifli, now Senior Parlimentary Secretary at Ministry of Education and Member of Parliment of Tampines GRC.
It tells of how he survived on bursaries, a dedicated iron-clad discipline, with that he toiled at the old NTI (now NTU) for 4 years and achieved First Class honours in Electrical Engineering.
Now that’s freaking cool and something even me, the least impressionable of a person, would like to emulate. I know I’m no rocket scientist, but the article really gave me the ‘ummph’ to at least try my best.
I still dream of being a Nominated MP for my GRC. Hahaha. Vote for me, if you see this old uncle running for the post alright. Well I’ve uploaded the article here. Do read them yar ;-)
Mr Masagos quoted: “We don’t really fail … I think it’s far worse not trying than fail trying”

Going through four years without any books and still graduate with first class honours is beyond amazing. His hard work and determination should be an inspiration for the rest of us. Talking about idolisation, yes, i agree, he’s someone we can idolise about.
Post more entries of such subtance sha. It’s a fresh change from, you know, normal blog senseless entries.
And you are an idol on your own rights too.
Cheers!
=)

yeah, idol is good for the malays to cemerlang.
idols like Allah,Nabi Muhammad,Quran, ibubapa and the banded successful malays are the 5 idols many malays must ada.
it is something, universal and relevent.
taht’s my idols.
my exact same sentiments
Wow you are so rara with the Melayu Boleh stuff eh.
I must admit (I’m part Malay by the way) that most of the Malay people I know, inclusive of some of my relatives, don’t really like to emphasize the importance of education. It is they lack the foresight to see that it is a good thing in the long run. It is sad, because some of these people are really bright and could go a long way, if properly educated. I’m not say that education is the be and end all, but that it helps a great deal to have paper qualifications, especially in Singapore.
Gd choice of idol, and gd work on then entry =)
well its good propaganda, thats all i can say :-)
