melayu-car-2007.jpg

It seems on the road, I’m seeing more and more Melayu driving cars. Is it any indication we’re more affluent these days? Maybe but there’s an increasing trend how certain Melayu who have cars but are actually living beyond their means to own that car.

And the statistics is increasing. They have to scrape through every month to meet the monthly car fees. And going through all the hardship just for what? It’s all for show only lah! Cheeeeeet …

I think that’s really stupid lah!

In the first place, do we actually need cars? Compared to other countries, our public transport would seem like a ‘jerk-off’ experience. I can truly proudly say, “Yes our public transport is world class!”

Here if we’re not happy with the service, we can even beat up the bus driver, where else can you do that.

To own a car, you need to get your license, go through the theory test and even withstand the abuse from the male driving instructor if you don’t have a pussy. I think it’s only worth to take the license if your company provide you with a company car.

Back to the topic at hand. Ooi Abang, if you cannot afford a car, then don’t. Yes you’ll mama drama eksyen with that new car of yours but you’ll be eating rice and canned food probably for the next few years. Kuakuakua

oh anyway, u got to give credits to those who really worked hard and saved up to have a car.. of cos the eksyen2 ones, jalan dah!wakakakakak..

    • Uncle Sha says:

true but there’s also the taxi or rent a mini-van

i’m glad i’m still a student, ada concession pass

      haiz senang-senang, buy a beca :-p

i feel if you wanna buy a car, if you can really afford it or have a family

  2. Shaz says:

there was an entry last yr on Ridzwan.com on this topic exactly. quite a thorough analysis. do read the solutions/ suggestions he provided for overall better financial management. I like Ridzwan. He critiques AND offers possible solutions. Very smart guy. =)

  3. Shaz says:

oops sorry…what happened above? Hmmm. anyway, the post title is: The Bankrupt Mat. I like how he does due diligence i.e. research and statistics and really thinks through before posting entries. very quality entries, i personally think. He doesn’t just whack just bec he today he discovers he is not happy about something. think first, write later..

    • Uncle Sha says:

Well I’m no scholar, I just write what i feels like. Justifying every single blog entry I’ve, hmm that would be taxing on me

I’m a ‘bruiser’ … my english O’level tak pass lah sista

Sometimes my blogs entries are just rants, it’s just me. my own style. I don’t want to be overcritical and over-analyze somethings thats just plain obvious.

Refreshing to read Ridzwan entry, thanks for the link :-)

  4. Miss Loi says:

Encik, if you’re like me my monthly taxi fare before I bought my kereta was more than the monthly installment I’m paying now. Anyway the taxi/bus service in Singapore never fails to make me …. *grrrrrr*

But I agree if you work in an office job and use the car just to commute to/fro your workplace during the peak ERP hours (and get taxed the max ERP), pay for TWO expensive season parking (one for office and one for home), and if your company gives you transport allowance, then I think take taxi better.

But if you’re in sales line always rushing to meet clients in ulu industrial areas then maybe should consider your own own kereta coz time is money!

    • Uncle Sha says:

wah like that revert back to have a car then? erm well so far the buses/mrt i take is fine with me. maybe i’ve yet to join the work force full time, i’m not in ur position

true having a car have its ‘perks’. but it has it downside

for me, its simple, thus this blog entry. if i can afford it, i’ll get a car

  5. Shaz says:

oh oh! will u be at the SWIFT event today? my bro’s running in the 100m under 17 just for kicks! hohohoho. see you if i see you =)

  6. eddyboi says:

i have a hamba Allah, who owns a car at my wrkplace…. nak drive HONDA CIVIC VTI yang canggih… put spoiler and everything… but everytime, pay day, his money gone.. and at the end of the mth, even before we get our pay, he will be eating cup noodles, jus so tat he can feed his car….

i think its how ur finance and ur credibility in managing ur money tat counts… i think owning a car is not a show off… if u can afford it, why not? but if u can’t… then naik public sudah….

    • yanni says:

true…. i agree with eddy. but some ppl are just pain in the ass.

    • Uncle Sha says:

maybe more young malay adult are more inclined to own a car

if middle age guy, maybe he’s having a mid life crisis

for older guys, wanna go JB and shop there!

keke, ok a lame generalization but there’s some truth to that kan

wah ur fren so nice, feed the car, but not himself. haha … so stuipdooooo

  7. fil says:

honestly i can’t stand these ppl.. asal eh they do all this? nak tangkap glamour? nak tangkap style?

my cousins all have cars and they too are scraping by day by day.. and YET both husbands and wives are working!!! Bodoh nak mampos(BnM)!!!

my mum was forcing me to drive a car too and in my selamba way, i told her off.

    “mak, naik motor lagi bahagia!!!”

at least i can pay off everything within a few months, without having to scrap by, even when i’m still a student paying with my own pocket money. bllrr.

melayu kene ader wawasan? ni wawasan taik ayam ni..

    • Uncle Sha says:

maybe it’s just us as a race in whole

you know all about ego and face saving of singaporeans

we malays are just too hung up on ‘status’. we would rather go hungry than be ‘left out’

glad you’re sensible enough not to have a car now

      btw i’ve linked you up

  8. Nana says:

its good to have a license..mana lah tahu emergency..but to get a car…nahhhhhhhhhhhhhh-uh..duit simpan buat kawin lagi bagus =P

    • Uncle Sha says:

yeah getting a license is top of my list but i’m doing it coz likely i’ll have a better chance during my interview if they know i can drive

kahwin … eh u dah thinking abt it eh .. gatal u :-p

  9. fizzy says:

ar? Tak bastard gitu blog entry… LOL!!! Critic habis siah babe lu… Caya ar… :D

  10. moby says:

I actually read about your post first on Cowboy Caleb. Cool!!

About your post, yeah, true …. lots of Malays are buying (actually that should be ‘borrowing’ since they are in debt to the car financing companies / banks) cars, and not because they have a need to, eg. to ferry kids to and from school, elderly parents to the clinic, etc.

The worst kind of Malays would be those who own a car (even a Waja) and they think they’re better than everybody else.

    • Uncle Sha says:

yeah he pimped me! i have to thank him. he’s like the big kahuna in local blogging man

well if the current trend continues, we’ll have another issue to handle, not as if we already have the current ones to content with

  11. Diah says:

    i agree with you.

Malays have this thinking of “biar papa (kedana), asal glamour”. but seriously, if you cant afford it then dont even dream about it

like my family, we’re still thinking it through whether or not to buy a car. there are the pros, but i think the cons covers more of it. it’s convenient, yes. but the other whatnots like your daily oil topup, monthly carpark fees, maintenance and ERP which makes us think twice or maybe more about owning a car. if we really need to use a car, there is always the rental company. it’s much safer and we dont have to think about maintenance =P

    • Uncle Sha says:

like that it’s best not to own a car FOR NOW hur for you

having a car is always optional i feel, the need really need to impt enough for you to purchase one … that is if you’re the part of the 90% of the mid-low income earners lah

BANYAK MELAYU NI, DUIT TAKDA TAKPA, GAYA METSTI ADA. ADA PULAK NAIK NYE SIKIT, TAPI DIA NYE BONGKAK BERLIPAT GANDA! unQuote.

tak silap lagi. i encountered this not long ago while working. i know this bitch since my sec school days. she worked at this prestigious company and one day happened to have lunch at the cafe i worked at. basket, when she was about to pay, she got the cheek to ask me, ‘eh shud i pay with visa or cash?” and mind you, the bill did not even reach $30. she decided to pay using her visa but what made me furious was that she ‘anggek-ly’ threw her card on the bill folder. &^#&^$$^% peh pompan.

but somehow i suspect that visa is a debit card….sheesh!

    • Uncle Sha says:

wah marah betul dia on this issue

yeah if you do happen to get a car, have it for the right reason kan

      yanni yummy boleh!

  13. yanni says:

and ya, my colleague ni dia drive PROTON GEN 2, tapi dia punya kerek, dia ingat dia jessica alba!!! dia show off dia nye credit card lah, pakai mana nye boss seh… but u know what, her paycheck is lower than mine!!!! my sales target and achieved sales are more than her. so can tell me whats wrong with her? before i tarik skirt dia!!! i letak taik kat kereta dia. hahahahaha!!!! if she happens to read this, goood!!! :)

  14. Nana says:

yanni..wooohooo…laser! =) but what you say is true lah…sikit-sikit nak show off their plastic card…

  15. eyeshack says:

ok not at the topic of malays owning cars, but rather on the general topic of cars itself.it really amazes me la.the number of cars in singapore is just mind-boggling!and to think that the gah-men is actually doing their best to reduce the number of cars on the roads.khark ptui!every other month,i hear one of my friends or my friend’s friend buying a new car.basket!mana dorang dapat duit ni har?and really, the number of cars in singapore harus dikurangkan jadi taklah jam sangat.astaghafirullah *urut dada*

    • Uncle Sha says:

i think the gahmen has its quota infact, the numbers are still in check but i believe they will raise the bar if its out of hand. so be prepared to pay more if you want a car next time round!

      you’re linked by the way

  16. ros says:

    u. sha! u just dampened all my hopes in getting a car when i get back.
but this iv to admit, i wish cars in sg would be as cheap as in oz.
then again, i wish public transportation in sg would be as cheap too.

HAHAHA! and im so glad iv a pussy cos my tp was a breeze… not!
bloody u! im a good driver ok! HAAHAHAHAHA

    • Uncle Sha says:

well get a car then! then can ferry suzy, fa, me ard kan

we pay you by love! fren love .. keke

wahhh you mean u got ur license oredi ah, so jealous i!!

  17. voeg says:

Ramai orang, banyak ragam. While i’m sure there r many of them who GENUINELY can afford cars, i’m sure many Malays too really have them merely ‘for show’.I’m currently in de process of trying 2 get a driving licence (failed on my 3rd attempt in early June; now waiting 4 book a retest). But when i finally pass my TP in future (insyaAllah & pls pray 4 me thx), i’m pretty sure i’ll go carless for a good while, no matter WHAT other ppl say (convenience lah, COE cheap lah, etc). I grew up & survived and am still surviving wth public transport. One of de worst things u can do is 2 own a car for all de wrong reasons!

    • Uncle Sha says:

i really would like to do a expenses count of having a car vs public transport. some mentioned having a car is far cheaper. i’ve yet to accept that notion

well good luck with ur retest! voeg boleh!!

  18. voeg says:

By de way i also have a theory:

Malays luv fatty food> Malays eat fatty food, become ill> get high blood pressure, diabetes, etc.> Worsen when age gets older>need 2 send grandpa & grandma for medical checkups but they’re ‘too weak’ 2 take public transport>family members buy car to ferry them around>some Malays buy car though they cant really afford it>parents get ‘so used’ to cars>everywhere go also must be in cars>daughters ‘pressurised’ indirectly or directly to get bf/hubbies wth cars> men wanting to woo gals start thinking of getting cars> buy cars even when they cant really afford it. Cycle goes on and on.

U tink my theory has a bit of logic or not? Anyway i hope u dont mind i link ur blog ok, Uncle Sha. Thx.

    • Uncle Sha says:

keke thats some theory … wah kalah datin/datuk

i do hope thats not the case, if not, we malays are in for a tough time ahead

yeah sure link me … i’ve linked u btw

  19. airhole says:

    think u got “caleb-ed”

  20. Sha I agree with you on this topic. Because I’ve got a friend who always borrow other people’s money including we as his friends to buy certain things that he wants. A couple of years ago he wants to buy Kelisa but didn’t have the money. So he SMS me and my friends at the same time with the same SMS. WTF? Before this he will steal or beg his girlfriends, which I can’t even count, for money. Sometimes sold their necklace to the pawn shop.

This kind of attitude really makes me sick and Voeg also true on that kind of mentality. Buy cars to get some chicks but what’s the use if you can’t afford it. Plus the oil price is high and what do you need to drive fast since you’re wasting a lot of petrol. It’s still the same. Buy car + petrol = need money $$4, bling bling.

    • Uncle Sha says:

he’s doing it for all the wrong reason seh. maybe his upbringing is kinda screwed.

well thats another topic la, such people, money lenders who dun return

  21. teeshah says:

to be honest with u, its not that hard to own a car these days. if u have the means, why not? COE are falling. not too sure about now, but the past few years has been crazy low. there’s also a choice of buying a weekend car. u pay 1/2 of the price of COE for a peak period car . quite honestly, there is no need to drive to work… AT ALL. why should u when u’ll end up paying more for petrol, ERP and parking. when a bus ride cost u less than $2! but a car can come in handy! it gives u the freedom to plan ur own journey. i suppose thats what most of us look for when they buy a car.

if u have a stable job, $200 a month is all u need for an off peak car. i suppose you’ll be paying for the next 10 years? but trust me, no one keeps a car sampai scrap value. minimum, after 5 years they will sell it off. then buy a new one… and the loan… u just continue paying… but… at least u have a brand new car! and partly, yeah. people buy cars to show off too.

    • Uncle Sha says:

like i said, if u can afford it, go for it :-)

but we’re still student babe, kita nak mimpi pasal kereta pun jangan harap , keke

no one in my family has ever owned a card, so i guess the urge to own it for me, it just not there. maybe when i’ve my own family

  22. Fai` says:

Still bro.. I tink having bike is still better compared to car. =P

  23. dee says:

Hyped up column here=) Well I’ld say that having transport on your own is rather good because lets face it, the public transport is getting very expensive. Its ridiculous when 5 busstops will cut off close to a dollar in your ezlink and whats worse is that when the 5th stop lands in a bloody cbd area, the fare escalates to $1.50. IF we have to make multiple trips due to work and school and we compare the tallied amount to monthly payment of an average car, public transport CAN eat up more money than car payment. I spend about half of my salary alone on transport. Sampai fed up I’ll just drop off 2 stops and walk home ahah!

But if you go JB and you can see alot of those aunties in the other cars and looking at your car with an expression like there’s crap beneath their nose then..tu confirm mak cik tengok status punye..

  24. hidayah says:

I guess there is a need to balance monthly expenses and how important the car can be for own and family needs before considering buying a car. But it’s always good to be amed with a licence. :D

  25. SAo says:

Pardon me, sorry you guys need car?, public transport is good and what more? may be holiday in Kuala Lumpur, and then you can see Malays own cars everywhere.

  26. Skype says:

Owning a car here in Singapore is NOT a must! Its a necessity for those who can afford it well and for those who have earned a very comfortable high basic income every single month! Unfortunately, most of the Malays here in Singapore DO NOT EARN MUCH compared to other races.

I got a friend here who work in a bank dealing with debts and loans of cars and other issues. And I was informed that most of the car loans requested here are mostly Malays. That is so sad!

The Malays here in Singapore needs to be financially educated. Not just educated in ITE ,Polytechnic or other private institutions! But they need to be financially literate! To be financially educated!
