Don’t Forget The 90′s Kungfu Movies

Is this the ‘best’ fight scene of all time? From “Undefeatable” (1993)

As I was harping over the 80′s western TV golden era, the 90′s brought a whole new generation of kickass whooping time.

I recalled chipping in whatever coins I have with my friends when I was a kid and we pooled all the money together.

We then get an ‘adult’ (most of the time someone senior in our group) who is of age to rent video tapes VHS.

Our rental tapes most of the time are either horror or action flicks. The latter is rented more often as we would practice some of the moves seen on TV, replicated in the living room with each other!

Back then VHS tapes was the bomb and bootleg movies was the norm. The whole lot of us would go to this chubby kid’s house, who has a bad temper. We endured his attitude as he was the rich kid around having a VHS tape player.

Asian Far East kungfu, ninjitsu and karate influenced many of the films back then. Not forgetting before WWE was finally renamed, there was WWF.

We can’t get enough of it back then and looking back at some of the movies now; not by choice of course but stumbling via YouTube, I can’t help but wondered how could I have watched such a bad and corny movies.

Substantial part of our time back then was spent in video stores, going through the book-like catalogue. The movie cover was wrapped in plastic, and it was nearly torn off or in crappy crumpling condition. I guess the neighbourhood kids like us flipped it too many times.

I was crazy over ninja movies back then, Chuck Norris was like a sifu to us (we learned his moves via video distance learning, haha), Bolo Yeung is the coolest bad guy around, and when girls fight in movies, then tend to like kicking guys balls. They still do now right? We boys would always instinctively clutch our crotch when that happens. Never fails every time :p

Guys get kicked in the crotch but doesn’t work on girls… so not fair right? Haha.

My favourite VHS tape of all time was Stand by Me until mould invaded the innards :(
