NDP 2007 (At the Padang)

Yes we did survived the BO crowd, and much to our dismay, we smell of BO after that too! Hahaha, souvenir of NDP Parade for us. Well after our trip to the Esplanade, we went to the Padang via the Citylink underground pass, so as not to encounter the large crowds on top.

ndp-07-17.jpg

We didn’t quite followed the direction of huge crowds going, instead we opted for the more less crowder path, and we still managed to get to the Padang with time to spare and plenty of seats still unoccupied before the Parade started

ndp-07-18.jpg

We found a seat outside the Padang, at the concrete steps there. Well the Padang was enclosed and you need to queue up to get in. The thing is, NTUC people who was tending the Padang, was trying to form the largest human Singapore flag using provided umbrellas.

We sure don’t wanna queue and we sure don’t wanna be a Rihanna’s Umbrella contingent

ndp-07-19.jpg

After we found our lovely spot, Hairol went to the nearby 7-11 and Old Chang Kee for refreshment and food, while me, I ‘chop’ our seats. Cannot use tissue paper here, hahaha.

ndp-07-20.jpg

I made friends with a cheena auntie. I gave her my extra spot for her and her daughter. Her husband was at the Parade with their son while she was here at the Padang. The thing is, she was given only 2 tickets by their friends. So here she was

ndp-07-21.jpg

When Hairol came back, he managed to buy the last of the popiah being sold. Gerek la brada. So oily and sedap. We gave away one of our bottled water to the auntie, kesian la seeing her and the daughter under the hot sun without refreshment

ndp-07-22.jpg

It was around 5pm when we arrived there. So before the parade got started, the NTUC people had some performers doing their stuff. Also in between, they practiced the Umbrella formation like opening/closing it and the wave. Everyone looks excited, as they were promised they will be caught LIVE on TV for their umbrella routine performance.

ndp-07-23.jpg

For those who can afford it, they would be clever enough to book a room at the Raffles Hotel there. It will overlook the whole proceedings, at the Marina Bay and the Padang. Great way to spend some quality time with your spouse or partner. Can *ehem* hanky panky later on also mah. A joyous day what …

ndp-07-24.jpg

Overall the crowd was sporting and most were looking forward to the Parade. I can see it in their eyes. By evening, our so called spot was beginning to get crowded. Behind us was people standing, these are the people who didn’t managed to get the seats. So they stood. They’re probably excess people from the Marina side who can’t get into the Esplanade anymore

ndp-07-25.jpg

The initial part of the parade was entertaining and exciting. The military hardware on display, the precision of our NS boys and regulars during the march pass. The big guns going off and such. I didn’t notice the gunners with rifles who does that precision synchronize thingie. Did I miss it? Anyway I’ve some clips on video from the Padang below

But as the show progress, it gets more boring. I don’t really understand much of what being on displayed. I mean it looks flashy and nice but can you be less artsy pansy. That dude on online skating outfit looks it just came out of Nightmare of Elm Street. Yes it was held at the Marina Bay and the theme is the sea, but where was the lion … we’re called Singapura, the Lion City

ndp-07-26.jpg

For me it was a toothless performance for NDP 2007. It was such a bore. Such a forgettable performance. Not only me find it darn boring, but the crowd around me also have the puzzled look and they were fidgeting alot, like moi.

ndp-07-27.jpg

Still overall it was an ok NDP parade, but I do hope next year won’t be even more crappier. They should stick to the basics. Lotsa guns, lotsa formation fly-pass, lotsa hardware, lots explosion, sing-able patriotic songs and such

The fireworks

ndp-07-28.jpg

Singapore skyline at night is just amazing sight don’t your agree. Yes we’re a concrete jungle, but it does has a plus points. The bright lights are just so pretty. Indeed despite our current woes and complaint of the gahmen being an ass at times, we became a third world country to a first class one in a span of 40 years. Amazing yes …

ndp-07-29.jpg

NDP Parade won’t be complete without the fireworks. Well there was some in between the performances. I wish there was more however. An orchestra of fireworks was being displayed that night. It never cease to amaze me and just go “Waaaaaaahhhhhhh”

ndp-07-30.jpg

Of course, the biggest, brightest and best fireworks was left for the finale, right at the end of the parade. It was great, a full five minute of vibrant spectacle. The kids with their mouth gaping open, some adults too (like moi) and we truly felt the excitement of the Parade finally after the previous boring performances.

ndp-07-31.jpg

Singfest 2007 (At Fort Canning)

ndp-07-32.jpg

After the Parade, we went to Fort Canning Park. No we’ve not turned gay … Hairol got free tickets to the SingFest 2007! Woohoooooo. Party time baby, with performances like Cyndi Lauper, Hinder, Pet Shop Boys, MXPX, Avenge Sevenfold and more!

ndp-07-33.jpg

By the time we got there it was already nearing to 9pm. We still have some three hours to enjoy the show. After the entry check, we made our way to the top of the fort Canning slope. We found some old newspaper, used it as mats. If not we would have to sit on the wet grass itself

ndp-07-34.jpg

I observed that it was a really young crowd. Way too young … Some was not old enough even to buy liquor, some have not even seen the inside of a club, but oh boy some of the young girls can really dance!

ndp-07-35.jpg

We decided not to join the rowdy crowd at the front of the concert area there. We just wanna chill and enjoy the music from where we are. The music was loud and it was happening. You can even make out here and no one would even bother you. That’s how laxed security is. Just don’t murder anyone lah!

The security was pretty much non-existent and I like it. Unlike at some gigs, security really dampen the mood. Where got concert, where you can’t stand on the seats. Here you can practically do anything.

Before midnight we decided to skip the last performance by Hinder and made our way back home. We were tired by then. Hairol was from his NUS orientation, while me, I had training in the morning which was taxing … That was our National Day Outing

Singapura Boleh!

Do read Part I if you have missed it
