Hilarious you think? I think not lah. Approaching 30 years old, single for the past two years, dozen or so relationships, countless dates, it’s beginning to worry me if I’ll lead a life of chastity

Here are my chances of finding a girlfriend in Singapore. What are my odds of me getting happily attached …

Number of people in Singapore (in 2006): 3,608,000 ^[1]

I work with the largest demographic, Singapore population. Total population comprises Singapore residents and non-residents. Resident population comprises Singapore citizens and permanent residents. I decide to count only Singapore residents

Number who are female (in 2006): 1,820,000 ^[2]

Obviously I want to date females. I’ve yet to go astray, I’ve not lost hope lah. That will be my last option of course. By a long shot if I do turn crooked, I would settle for someone effeminate looking lah, someone like Utt … haha

Number who are female aged 20 to 44 (in 2006): 726,000 ^[3]

I would prefer mature women in fact or someone closer to my age, as I want to grow old with her and not having a pedophiles nor ‘father-daughter’ image when out in public. But still someone older or younger than me, I wouldn’t mind. Age doesn’t really matter as long there’s chemistry and we get along fine. I stop short of 44 years old as I want children in my life. Anyone older, I think it will be a risk or harder for Ms Right to bear any offspring

Number who are beautiful: 16,517 ^[4]

Beauty is subjective as we all know. I’ve my own personal preferences, so does everyone. But as long you’re presentable, I’m ok with it. I keep myself in fit and I can be vain too, so my gal should be too. Beautiful couple make beautiful babies, tio? … I made use of the probability formula via the source which is two standard deviations above the norm. From basic statistics theory, the area to the left of the normal curve at z = 2, multiply to aged 20 to 44 population pool

Number who are intelligent: 2,620

Again intelligent is another virtue that have varying meanings on different level for various people. Well I had to use the source formula as I agree with him that such intelligence has a notionally normal distribution across the population. I will settle for someone a mere one standard deviation above the normal; which means a new figure will be gathered

Number who are not already committed: 1,066 ^[5]

Those not committed which means single, divorce/separated and widowed stands at 40.7% of total Singapore population. So the previous current intelligent figure (40.7% of 2,620) who is not committed now stands at 1,066

Number who also might like me: 533

Getting a suitable girl to like you back depends on personal attractiveness preference and I believe it is normally distributed. So we put it at 50% chance that any given female will consider me even marginally attractive. So 50% of 1,066 is 533

Conclusion

So my pool of possible ladies is 533 acceptable females in Singapore. Somewhere out there in Singapore, a female lady aged between 20-44 who is beautiful and intelligent plus unattached and importantly she is interested in me. To find this certain lady of mine, if I were to go on a date every two weeks, I would have to date for the next 214 weeks before I found one suitable lady of the 533 females. And 214 weeks is around four years. A typical male Singapore life expectancy is 77 years old, so the above figures assures me that I can find a girlfriend in no time before I hit my forties! That is if I start dating every two weeks non-stop from now. That means I would find my new girlfriend way before I kaput, haha.
