Pretty Faces

Sha March 27, 2007 26

What constitutes a person to be beautiful? Let’s for a moment forget about good figures and focus on the face itself. Also forgo the notion “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” stuff. I was surfing Pretty Faces website on Flickr, and they have photos of beautiful people.

I think it falls on questions of symmetry – people with more symmetrical faces, in particular, are seen as more beautiful. This would also be a trait of youth, before time makes its mark. See the below pictures. I’ve divided it into pixelated boxes. Don’t you find all the have symmetrical look to them.

Well I tried the symmetry thing on my face & I find that I’ve plenty of ‘flaws’. But I’m ok with that. We all have our shortcomings right. This is my latest photo taken for my upcoming new matriculation card.

I swear to god I didn’t photoshop the photos. The instant photo machine did it, as I know I don’t have that flawless of a complexion.

Speaking of identity photos, do you guys have ugly looking taken photos? Well I do! It has been fugly looking ones, starting with my IC, my current student matriculation card, to my previous polytechnic student card. Here’s the proof below! Hahaha, laugh all you want! I’m just glad my recent photo above, taken for my new matriculation card doesn’t suck!

Well don’t you find it interesting why human find some people attractive and others homely. Well I’ve been ‘kepohing’ online reading stuff and it seems numerous studies indicate that human beauty may not be simply in the eye of the beholder, but part of our eons of human evolution. Reward the ‘winners’ and killed off the ‘losers’.

Let me explain, if you were to meet someone who has flawless skin, deep down at primal level, it persuades us that she is parasite-free and consequently good mating material. Get it? …

I think it’s good to be beautiful and be blessed if you are lah!

As landmark studies have shown that attractive males and females not only garner more attention from the opposite sex, they also get more affection from their mothers, more money at work, more votes from the electorate, more leniency from judges, and are generally regarded as more kind, competent, healthy, confident, and intelligent than their big-nosed, weak-chinned counterparts.

In fact I find my blogger friends are quite the pretty and handsome looking people too. You know who you are la :-) Don’t be humble now …

More reading online in-fact leads me to a Japanese dude studies. You guys should really read up some of Dr Satoshi Kanazawa studies. It’s kinda interesting. An example “Why beautiful people are more intelligent“. He has plenty of unique interesting research, some are just hilarious.

Well the overall conclusion about beauty then … ?

Here’s a dude who think he ‘knows’ what beauty is all about

Victor Johnston, a professor of biopsychology at New Mexico State University “Human beauty really has three components,” says Johnston.

In order of importance, there’s natural selection, which leads to the average face and a limited age range. Then there’s sexual selection,” which leads men, at least, to be attracted to exaggerated feminine traits like the small lower jaw and the fuller lips.

“Finally, there’s learning. It’s a fine-tuning mechanism that allows you to become even more adapted to your environment and culture. It’s why one person can say ‘She’s beautiful’ and another can say, ‘She’s not quite right for me.’

As for me, beauty is ____________ (Hmm I still have yet to fill in that blank)

How about you? What do you think beauty is?

Scarlett Johansson’s face isn’t symmetrical. Her smile is slanted. But that’s why she’s hot. A slanted smile has a subtle, playful sexiness to it.

For someone so young, she’s hot ‘commodity’ in hollywood. imagine her paycheck per film!

i refuse to think that symmetrical faces are always the prettiest, cos I have the most assymetrical face I know! *sob* hahaha, but it’s alright lah, gotta be happy with what God has given me. :P

but you’re right, the beautiful pple do have it easier in life. i’ve seen it happen numerous times at work and in school. pretty girls and good-looking guys get less flak from their bosses, and they generally can get pple to help them at will. but that’s cos normal pple like us are suckers for these beautiful pple, heh.

    • Uncle Sha March 28, 2007 at 10:44 am - Reply

Still having a face symmetrical is more desirable than a more less than ‘perfect’ look to it kan … true la, we’ve to accept for all our shortcomings. cant change how we look. i did however put a paper bag over my head once in sch before, that didn’t turn out well. haha

i’ve to agree too i’m a sucker when a pwetty classmate or co-worker ask for help. but then again i’m a guy, we’ve a tendency to be ‘pigs’.

i think everyone loves looking at someone who is ‘aesthetically’ pleasing. i do …
