Being Paid …

Sha April 9, 2007 16

When I was young, I would always dream of doing a job that pays me highly, get the 5Cs ala the Singaporean dream and have 2.3 kids at my freehold Riverdale Condominium.

Well as you mature, not all is a ‘bed of roses’ and your ideal idea of that job when young versus now, comes to a realization that doing something more ‘rewarding’ is what I’m looking for.

Thou I’m still studying now, going through the final hurdle of my undergrad years, I’ve been blessed to have been offered a job. But the job kinda involves me to be working as an engineer. But after years in this field, I find it that it’s not my cup of tea anymore.

Being an engineer you’ll get involve in projects and management. I’ve been on internship on both Polytechnic and NTU days, the more I am doing what I’ve been taught to do, the more I feel this is not my ‘calling’.

I do however love sports and the outdoors. Slowly I’ve branched out to these areas where I’ve taken several courses on coaching plus I’m a part-time reporter at SingaporeAthletics.com. My another blog site.

To do something that you love and being paid for it, I think, that’s what I’m ideally looking for. And the closest thing to that, is either being a personal trainer or enroll in the PGDE program where I’ll be a PE teacher in schools.

In my books, that’s a job that I feel I’m more comfortable doing and I can foresee myself getting involved in it immensely for years. Of course if that don’t work out, my last resort is to become the typical boring dreaded engineer or sign-up as an officer with the Police.

Well have you read recently about our Minister’s pay rise? Compared to other government official ministers around the world, ours is the most highly paid around.

Of course, being that if they deserve it, based on their job performance, by all means, pay them but it does raise a question when even US President George Bush or Finland Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen which has a lower corruption than Singapore & most competitive market in the world is being paid a fraction of what our ‘top brass’ are being paid.

I really wonder if they love doing what they’re doing or is it just about money and power. Imagine being paid more than we would earn in our lifetime, just to ‘talk cock’ and look presentable on TV. I wouldn’t say their job is all that.

I’m sure they have nitty gritty things to do like shake hand with their constituents, sign papers and long lunches. I think it’s a good life. Being a ministers, you’re set for life I think. Of course to be one, you need to be a scholar, and good records. So far I don’t think there is any minister which is from the heartland or commoner background. If there is, do tell …

Well I’m still undecided about my future and career. You can say I’m at a cross road now. Again if every conceived plan I’ve made fails, I could always become a Nominated MP for my GRC. I wanna take a shot at it, hahaha the Good Life!

Don’t forget to vote for me :-p

I’ll vote for you, MP for Jurong :D Hehehe …

Anyways, if it werent for the internet, we wouldnt even have known that the ministers are getting a pay raise. The newspapers wouldnt report this, nothing on channelnewsasia too.

Heh. They can say all they want about “being paid peanuts and get monkeys”, they can say all the want about it being necessary to have a non corrupted environment.

    Its all bullshit

    hey sha!

im back. miss my comments? =p hahahahaha!

anyways… are u interested in politics? u keep saying u wanna be a nominated MP. actuallykan… nominated MP do not represent a constituency. They are usually nominated by social groups/VWOs and so on to represent the general public during parliamentary sessions/debates.

one such person is eunice olsen… and previously is zulkifli baharudin who founded mercy relief.

oookk… i’ll spare u the boring details but i think u do have what it takes to be a NMP =) the first blogger to be NMP. kewl kan?

and bout the ministers pay. i have to agree. we pay top $$$ to so called compensate their sacrifices and services. but shouldnt public service comes from the heart? and if the other countries mentioned can pay their ministers… EVEN the President of USA within the means… why cant us? but well, we shall see what they say in parliament today.

wrt your qn if there is any minister that comes from humble beginnings. there are. since most of them were born pre-independence and grew up during the turmoil years of the 60′s and 70′s. i just read ST on sat ke sun…. bout Dr Baliji. but very few. Kalau MPs…. there are quite a no. in fact most of our malay MPs rise up the ranks with their sheer hard work.

ookkk… enough of my ramblings. this getting to be like an essay. hahahahaha =)

and im honoured to be one the bloggers you would like to meet. well, i do have some ideas to discuss with you too. LOL. after ur exams, insya-Allah.

    toodles~

Thanks for the info on the MP stuff, still learning my ropes, haha. Macam betul

Yeah it’s quite contradicting .. public service but highly paid. Even footballers in pro leagues don’t earn as much and they get the hard knocks to show for their effort

Yeah I’ve heard of zulkifli baharudin

yeah hope we meet up soon ok :-)

When comes to Ministers’ pay rise, I dun think i want to comment. But one thing I must say, though — no wonder the GST (Goods & SERVICES tax mah) increase to 7% in July. LOL. Enough said. U know what I mean.

Hahaha, refraining from commenting? that’s a first

I don’t think my blog warrant to be termed the more ‘politically active’ site & under surveillance

it’s just a rant which is shared by many people

unless of course, spore gov want to follow in msia footsteps by wanting local bloggers to register

maybe we’re just too rich, and US is just too poor. wasted all their fortune on senseless war.

if you’re in as the next NMP, u’re probably the other handsome MP next to vivian balakrishnan. now we have more reasons to watch politics on tv! LOL!

    • Uncle Sha April 10, 2007 at 9:44 am - Reply

We’re indeed RICH. Our reserve is enough to support couple of third world countries!

I’ve met vivian balakrishnan infact at some function. His kids are good looking too!
