Malaysia General Elections 2008

I don’t pretend to understand the intricate details of Malaysian politics, but I’ve been trying to follow the elections ever since January through the media when news of the national elections was announced

It is really an interesting election ‘year’, being that the ruling incumbent Barisan Nasional (BN) has stiff ‘competition’ this year from the opposition.

I’ve never seen so much ‘excitement’ and sensation within the Malaysian ranks in all my years. The opposition camp now has bloggers contesting seats, to the Barisan Nasional coalition frequent ‘muck-ups’ of it’s party member

We read it with glee as their stories was splashed across the media often; corruption and scandals among the top stories

Compared to our very own elections here, it makes us looks like our polls are ‘easy peasy lemon squeezy’.

I think the Malaysian people is at a crossroad for a change and I do hope they’ll choose the right ‘people’ into Parliament. The recent strife of racial equality to rampant corruption in the media is something that needed to be tackled

No this is not a blog entry about who to support; although at times like this I wish I was born on the ‘other side of the fence’, do read parties manifesto, vote and hope for the best I guess

I do have ties in Malaysia, being my parent maternal side is from there. So in a part, I’ll be watching this snap election quite closely

Here’s one of the many rally footage found on the Internet of the opposition. This one is by Anwar Ibrahim. I apologise for non-Bahasa speaking readers if you’re unable to understand it. There are some English parts in it however

Anwar Ibrahim is quite the charismatic, funny and engaging speaker. He really captivated the audience and spoke in layman, whilst poking fun at the Barisan Nasional and sharing anecdotes of his previous UMNO days. Too bad he can’t contest any seats

He would’ve been eligible to contest if the elections was held a few months later. Talk about coincidences. :P

      Oh they know about this.

They could have set the election date later but they prefer this snap election now. Because of Anwar or otherwise, we’ll never know

For me, I really would like to know how he would stand. Kinda interesting how it unfolds

wad the hell dee are u nuts? haha he is one sick minister who has sodomised his own step brother and faced curruption charges a decade ago.
guys, look and hear closely, this video is fake. the laughters are recoreded and dubbed again and again. this is how some communinities, people in malaysia are doped and fall into his strong and charasmatic speeches trap.i pity them. if those laughters are real, why not the cameraman just shift to the thousands of audiences that were cheering and clapping for him every 2mins? sure he can trick the viewers upside down but us?haha no way.my cousin just told me this video is fake. so its up to u guys to decide. thats from my opinion tho.

well although im a singaporean i do miss tun dr mahathir mohammad. such a great insipiring man. he changed malaysia alot over 2decades. :(

You got to say he’s an interesting fella. I’m not trying to defend him but keep an open mind

The sodomy charge was overturned, which released him early

The former DPM has good track record when he was in office, you can’t deny that but at a personal level, I think we all have ‘skeletons in the closet’. Does it make him any less of a team player

Probably yes and no, all depends on ya as the supporter

But looking at what Pak Lah promised when he got into office which came unfulfilled, and with the ‘issues’ M’sia is facing now, it can’t get any worse. Would you stick by a party who keeps on promising or a change is needed

Like I said, read the party manifesto, decide who to vote in and hope for the best

FYI I’m Singaporean, just an observer in this election

Nope not nuts, but if you have read his reports and the reports in comparison to those of BN, you would have understood why I choose him over his competitors.

There was no solid evidence he did so.

      http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/3619790.stm

“In reviewing the evidence, the court decided the prosecution’s key witness was unreliable and in effect an accomplice.

Azizan Abubakar alleged he had been sodomised by Mr Anwar in May 1994.

The date was later amended to May 1992, but when it emerged that the condominium where the alleged act supposedly took place did not then exist, the charge was amended a second time.

Mr Anwar’s supporters say he was charged for politically motivates
The court also concluded that Mr Anwar’s co-accused did not appear to have confessed voluntarily, and expressed concern that the police had been heavy-handed.

The judges therefore concluded that Mr Anwar should have been acquitted without having to enter a defence as the prosecution had not managed to prove the case beyond reasonable doubt.

Mr Anwar was sacked from his post as deputy in 1998 following a rift with Dr Mahathir over how to run the country’s economy.

Mr Anwar responded by leading a massive anti-government protest. That evening police broke down his door and arrested him.”

Uncle Sha, I quote you can?=)

Yes I support Anwar Ibrahim, someone who upholds justice and honour.

      And I’m proud of it=)

ps: I can’t find the hamilton!=( nvm will search more, if I find a store that sells it I’ll tell you ok?=D

good speech. somewhat like obama. he knows how to stir people’s feelings while making things as simple as possible. like what you said, speaking in layman’s terms.

to hp: fake or not, that’s politics. and public relations. it’s how you play the game that matters, not whether you win or lose.

You should lookup more of the rally online. There’s more ‘juicy’ stuff :)

i would have been eligible to vote hadn’t i renounced my Malaysian citizenship. Well, it’s a really tough decision. I’m torn between the BN and Keadilan. Not that they make the best leaders… but we don’t have that many reliable choices. I have no respect towards PAS after a report in the newspaper about their Chinese member who made a comment about eating pig and drinking beer. I am sure he meant no harm… but it sounded so insulting since he’s part of an Islamic party! But I know if the country wants infrastructure and money, they have to vote for BN. Because they control the money. But BN to me makes really bad political decisions and chose the wrong political leaders. Thank god I won’t be involved in the voting. I don’t care who wins, because they’re all just as bad, in my honest opinion.

      It can’t be all bad

It will be an interesting election

I bet it will be a record turnout for M’sian voters this election year, with so many at ‘stakes’

Malaysians already decide yesterday. The new dawn in Malaysia. Now is the time for them who won to work, work, work. It is not a time to celebrate yet. It is a clear sign that peoples’ need a change.
