Hey it’s Teachers Day tomorrow on September 1st! It’s an official school holiday. Celebrations are normally conducted the day before, when students get half a day off.
It’s been awhile since I celebrated Teachers Day, more than 15 years ago perhaps, but there a few teachers whom I still remembered and stood out in my mind. Well mainly because of their ‘notoriety’ around school, be it discipline or catching me doing something against the rules, haha.
No teacher has actually motivated me when I was in my delinquent schooling years, and after secondary school only one or two lecturers made a difference when I was in Poly and Uni.
Maybe that’s why I forgo the route of becoming one. It was one of my options for my career path once.
After all these years, I found that I’m the type of student that needs extra personal attention, and the lack of it thereafter in my younger days, got me to where I was heading, down the slippery slope of crap educational institutions.
I know I’m bright, but I was just unmotivated, was mixing around with the wrong crowd, and my priorities was all wrong.
I don’t know what is the local education system is like these days, I just hope the classes are smaller, and there’s teachers around who can give slightly more personal attention to ‘potential’ problematic students. Do not be afraid to ‘nudge’ them. Once pushed, they’ll budge, trust me.
I am so smart - Homer finally gets accepted to college and celebrates by lighting his high-school diploma on fire. To think of it, I did this nearly once with my O’ Level results, haha! Why? Because I nearly achieved 40 points for all my modules.
If you’re a teacher yourself or are embarking on a career on it, just know that despite us not saying it out loud, your contributions are indeed appreciated, and your roles around school makes a whole lot of difference on how our future will turn out to be.
To think of it, my choice of not signing up for a teaching career might just be a wise decision. I just couldn’t comprehend if one of my students turns out badly under my wings. I’m a perfectionist, go figure.
