National Day Message

Update: My bad. The National Day 2010 message can be found here http://nettv.1-net.com.sg/PMO/NDMessage.aspx.

I’ve been searching online for our Prime Minister’s National Day Message 2010 video, and I can’t find it. The social media part for our gahmen FAIL lah like that.

Instead I found National Day Message videos from the opposition such as Singapore Democrats (SDP) and National Solidarity Party (NSP). Scroll more below. They sure seems Internet savvy.

For today’s blog entry I thought of putting up PM Lee Hsien Loong’s National Day Message video here for those who missed it, but too bad lah. Anyway here’s a short recap of what was said by him last Sunday night.

  • Singapore’s gross domestic product grew 17.9% in the first half of this year
  • Comprehensive CET programme to be implemented
  • CET budget of S$5.5 billion (US$4.08 billion) is being invested over five years, two campuses are being built and there are other schemes to boost productivity
  • Pledged that the government would continue to ensure that all Singaporeans have more opportunities.
  • Better designed HDB estates
  • Higher quality schools and hospitals
  • More MRT lines
  • New places for recreation
  • Further improvements to the education system
  • More teachers to be being recruited to deliver a “more holistic and rounded education”.
  • Acknowledged the “valid concerns” over the influx of foreigners
  • Promises the inflow so it was “not too fast and not too large”
  • Said citizens come first
  • More efforts to bridge the widening income gap

I guess our biggest concern is the influx of foreign workers for our local citizens. We know we need such a workforce, but the sticking point is that there’s just too many of them being brought into our shores, far too soon in abundance for us to adapt and handle.

And to think that another 100,000 of such foreign import will be brought in soon enough.

With the election coming, it’s going to be an interesting period of time on how this issue will be tackled. Let the drama and empty promises begins.
