We all know we Sing-Chia-Po-Rean loves rankings.
We want and would love to be tops in just about anything, it’s the kiasi-kiasu genes we all have.
Well here’s a recent one by Mercer Quality of Living global city rankings 2009 done back in April. You might have read it before, but it’s new to me.
Singapore is currently ranked 26th in the world for the best city to live-in out of 420 cities.
The rankings are based on infrastructure, political and social environment, yada yada yada other chim factors lah.
Most of the top ranked cities are ang-moh EU countries like Vienna (Austria) and Zurich (Switzerland).
The extracts from the report about Singapore was:
- Singapore (26) is the top-scoring Asian city followed by Tokyo at 35.
- Singapore is at the top of best infrastructure index (score 109.1 based on electricity supply, water availability, telephone and mail services, public transport provision, traffic congestion and the range of international flights from local airports.) followed by Munich in second place.
- For city infrastructure, Singapore has the highest score world-wide (109.1). The city boasts an airport with excellent facilities and connections, as well as an efficient and extensive public transport network.
- Singapore (26) is the region’s highest riser, up six places since 2008.
- The city has gained importance as a financial centre and offers a wide range of international and private schools to cater to its expatriate community.
You know what, aside from reading this rankings, I also read-up on the blogs that posted such related entries on the rankings.
It’s funny how most opinions of the bloggers on their own nation is that despite that their cities are ranked highly, they’re not content with how their cities are developing itself.
I think it’s pretty similar sentiments here itself. We always think the pasture is always greener on the other side. I guess that’s why we’re losing so many of our local talents.
The exodus then brought foreign talents who thinks likewise on the better prospects working away from home.
But from what I noticed, these expats in the end returns to their home nation when they’ve had enough, while our local talents who are overseas, stays there indefinitely.
No wonder we’ve a population deficit.
Well for me personally, I just don’t know, should I set my roots here or elsewhere. I’m still undecided.

I want to come Singapore soon.. there too many my cousin live their..
Well I’ve not been to that many countries. Honestly I can’t live there for long either. Still love Singapore I don’t know why?
I prefer to have a base here. Even if I move away I know that there is a place and family and friends that are still here cos most of them can’t move out anyway due to their situations.
As a base meaning, a house here, business here. While overseas are merely branches, holiday homes to run away from the busy lifestyle.
Walaupun kita di negara orang, tetap hati masih di Singa-pura…
